Highly efficient immobilization of environmental uranium contamination with Pseudomonas stutzeri by biosorption, biomineralization, and bioreduction

Qiuhan Yu et al.

Summary: A marine Pseudomonas stutzeri strain MRU-UE1 was isolated for the first time with high uranium immobilization capacity. Through the synergetic mechanisms of biosorption, biomineralization, and bioreduction, this strain immobilized uranium in new forms under aerobic environment, showing potential applications in environmental uranium contamination remediation and uranium extraction from seawater.

Risk of colloidal and pseudo-colloidal transport of actinides in nitrate contaminated groundwater near a radioactive waste repository after bioremediation

Alexey Safonov et al.

Summary: The possible role of biogeochemical processes in the transport of colloidal and pseudo-colloidal U, Np, and Pu during bioremediation of radionuclide- and nitrate-contaminated groundwater was investigated. The study found that microbial processes could cause the coagulation of clayed, ferruginous, and actinide colloids, reducing the risk of their transport.

Contrasting archaeal and bacterial community assembly processes and the importance of rare taxa along a depth gradient in shallow coastal sediments

Xianzhe Gong et al.

Summary: Marine microbial communities assemble along sediment depth gradients, affected by various factors. Archaeal community assembly is determined by determinism, while bacterial community assembly is dominated by stochasticity. Rare taxa play a significant role in community stabilization, suggesting the importance of studying benthic microbial interactions in the bottom sediments.

The microbial impact on U, Pu, Np, and Am immobilization on aquifer sandy rocks, collected at the deep LRW injection site

Alexey Safonov et al.

Summary: This work analyzes the biogeochemical factors influencing the immobilization of Np, U, Pu, and Am, and finds that the development of microbial processes can significantly increase the sorption efficiency of Np and U. The immobilization of Pu remains high, while the effect on Am immobilization is negligible. The formation of amorphous SiO2 plays an important role in the distribution of U, Np, and Am bond forms on rock samples.

The Role of Phytoplankton in Self-Purification of Water Bodies with Radionuclide Pollutants

A. Safonov et al.

Summary: The review focuses on the involvement of phytoplankton in the self-purification process of water bodies contaminated with radionuclide pollutants. It assesses the mobility of major radionuclides in freshwater reservoirs and proposes a scale for evaluating their hazard. The study identifies I-129, Np-237, Ra-226, and Se-79 as potentially dangerous. It also analyzes the diversity of phytoplankton communities in contaminated reservoirs and synthesizes literature data on the mechanisms of radionuclide immobilization by phytoplankton biomass. The role of silt biomineralization in the long-term immobilization of radionuclides in bottom sediments is evaluated.

Hypolimnion behavior of technetium in freshwater at various stages of eutrophication

K. E. German et al.

Summary: The study explores the mechanisms of hypolimnion technetium behavior during waterbodies eutrophication, identifying a complex biogeochemical mechanism. It suggests that the planktonic phototrophic community plays a crucial role in ensuring fast oxygen consumption and creating favorable conditions for anaerobic bottom bacteria development. Additionally, sulfates and nitrates were found to inhibit 99Tc biosorption by bottom sediments due to oxidizing conditions.

Erosion as a Factor of Transformation of Soil Radioactive Contamination in the Basin of the Shchekino Reservoir (Tula Region)

V. N. Golosov et al.

Summary: The study assessed the redistribution of sediments and Cs-137 from the Chernobyl disaster in the Shchekino reservoir catchment using field methods and erosion model calculations. Snowmelt soil erosion on arable land decreased by half from 1986-2018 due to reduced soil freezing depth in winter. Rainfall erosion rate increased by a third between 1986-2003, but then decreased with rainfall erosivity index.

Bioremediation of Uranium- and Nitrate-Contaminated Groundwater after the In Situ Leach Mining of Uranium

Rehemanjiang Wufuer et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of a bacterial species, Clostridium sp. PXL2, in simultaneously immobilizing uranium and reducing nitrate. The results showed that this bacterium exhibited tolerance to U(VI) concentrations and achieved high rates of U(VI) immobilization and nitrate reduction in groundwater samples under neutral conditions.

Jenny Jessat et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interaction of U(VI) and Eu(III) with Brassica napus suspension plant cells. Results showed that over 75% of U(VI) and Eu(III) were immobilized by the cells, with a multistage bioassociation process observed for cells exposed to 200μM U(VI). A new U species was identified, suggesting interaction with plant metabolites.

Biogenic Ferrihydrite Nanoparticles: Synthesis, Properties In Vitro and In Vivo Testing and the Concentration Effect

Sergey V. Stolyar et al.

Summary: Biogenic ferrihydrite nanoparticles, synthesized from Klebsiella oxytoca microorganisms, exhibit superparamagnetism and affect the activity of neutrophilic granulocytes. However, in vivo testing on rats reveals chronic toxicity, leading to morphological changes in organs. Further studies at a systemic level are necessary to understand the adaptive-proliferative processes and cell dystrophy induced by the introduction of these nanoparticles into the body.

The potential of Pseudomonas for bioremediation of oxyanions

Sofia Vieto et al.

Summary: Non-metal, metal, and metalloid oxyanions are naturally present in the Earth's crust, but anthropogenic activities have increased their release into the environment, threatening natural ecosystems. The use of microorganisms for bioremediation of oxyanions and recovery of valuable elements is crucial in addressing this issue. Pseudomonas genus shows promise for upcycling oxyanions into added-value metal and metalloid byproducts through its specialized metabolism and oxidoreductases.
