Linking urbanization and air quality together: A review and a perspective on the future sustainable urban development

Xiaoyan Zhang et al.

Summary: Urbanization, along with industrialization and economic development, has had a profound impact on human society and its living environment. Air quality, as one of the most noticeable environmental factors, is currently a significant issue in urban areas of many low- and mid-income countries. This review examines the history of air pollution during various stages of urbanization in different income countries and provides a general understanding of the relationship between urbanization and air pollution. It suggests the development of preventive measures against environmental pollution during the process of urbanization in order to achieve sustainable urbanization with favorable air quality.

The effect of COVID-19 pandemic on human mobility and ambient air quality around the world: A systematic review

Sasan Faridi et al.

Summary: The study revealed a global decrease in air pollutants and an increase in ozone concentration during the COVID-19 pandemic. The effectiveness of emissions reductions varied among countries and cities due to the different levels of lockdown measures, which restricted human activities and emission sources. These findings suggest that lessons learned from the pandemic could serve as additional motivation for implementing comprehensive policies to reduce air pollution and its associated health impacts in the future.

Impacts of nature-based solutions on the urban atmospheric environment: a case study for Eindhoven, The Netherlands

Ana Ascenso et al.

Summary: This study assesses the contribution of Nature-based Solutions (NBS) to temperature attenuation and air quality improvement in the city of Eindhoven. Results show that NBS can reduce hourly temperature values by approximately 1 degrees C and nitrogen dioxide concentrations by around 10% in the study area. These findings are important for supporting public planners and decision-makers in planning for more sustainable and resilient cities.

Monthly Global Estimates of Fine Particulate Matter and Their Uncertainty

Aaron van Donkelaar et al.

Summary: This study developed a methodology for monthly PM2.5 estimates and uncertainties using satellite retrievals, chemical transport modeling, and ground-based measurements. Findings show higher winter PM2.5 concentrations in many densely populated regions, with South Asia and East Asia having particularly high levels, although East Asia showed a decreasing trend in PM2.5 concentrations over the period studied.

Policy-driven changes in the health risk of PM2.5 and O3 exposure in China during 2013-2018

Fangyuan Wang et al.

Summary: China implemented a series of control measures to reduce PM2.5 pollution, but O-3 concentration increased significantly during the implementation. The study highlights the need to comprehensively evaluate the positive and negative health effects of PM2.5 and O-3 driven by policies. Results show a decrease in premature deaths attributable to PM2.5 exposure, while deaths related to O-3 exposure increased, emphasizing the importance of synchronous control of PM2.5 and O-3 pollution for human health protection.

Variability, predictability, and uncertainty in global aerosols inferred from gap-filled satellite observations and an econometric modeling approach

Xueke Li et al.

Summary: Time series analyses and stochastic modeling play a critical role in assessing aerosols for climate change and human health studies. This study used MODIS Collection 6 AOD retrievals and RF regression to investigate AOD variations and trends globally. The results showed significant improvements in data coverage and accurate depiction of AOD profiles through the use of the RF and ARIMA models.
