Six principles to strengthen qualitative assessments in development interventions

Jess MacArthur et al.

Summary: Qualitative research and evaluation, considered an art, has been challenging to justify and utilize in monitoring, evaluation, and learning practice due to its intangible nature. Existing guidance, often focused on the Global North, lacks practicality and validation. This study aims to address this gap by providing practical and tested qualitative assessment guidance for programme teams in the Asia-Pacific region, with the goal of strengthening the future use of qualitative tools in programming.

Protocol for development and validation of instruments to measure women's empowerment in urban sanitation across countries in South Asia and Sub-Saharan Africa: the Agency, Resources and Institutional Structures for Sanitation-related Empowerment (ARISE) scales

Sheela S. Sinharoy et al.

Summary: This study aims to develop and validate a scale to measure women's empowerment in relation to sanitation in urban areas of low-income and middle-income countries. The study involves three phases: item development, scale development and initial validation, and scale evaluation and further validation. The research team will implement surveys in multiple cities and conduct statistical analysis to assess the reliability and validity of the scale, with the goal of informing programming activities in the future.

The water, sanitation and hygiene gender equality measure (WASH-GEM): Conceptual foundations and domains of change

Naomi Carrard et al.

Summary: This article introduces a recently developed quantitative measure of gender equality in WASH - the water, sanitation and hygiene gender equality measure (WASH-GEM) - and outlines the key challenges faced in its development. The authors developed the WASH-GEM through a collaborative process informed by a feminist perspective, literature review, pilot implementation, and partner engagement. They discuss the important considerations in the design of quantitative measures of social change, and define the five domains of measurement for the WASH-GEM. Reflecting on the design of the WASH-GEM, the article contributes to the discourse on methodological challenges and imperatives in measuring complex social change.

PRISMA2020: An R package and Shiny app for producing PRISMA 2020-compliant flow diagrams, with interactivity for optimised digital transparency and Open Synthesis

Neal R. Haddaway et al.

Summary: We have developed a user-friendly tool for producing PRISMA 2020-compliant flow diagrams for users with coding experience and, importantly, for users without prior experience in coding by making use of Shiny. This free-to-use tool will make it easier to produce clear and PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review flow diagrams. Significantly, users can also produce interactive flow diagrams for the first time, allowing readers of their reviews to smoothly and swiftly explore and navigate to further details of the methods and results of a review.

Examining water and gender narratives and realities

Sarah Dickin et al.

Summary: This paper critically examines four narratives, myths, or realities related to water and gender, and highlights the nuances and discrepancies underlying these narratives based on existing evidence. While examples and research largely focus on the Global South, the need for similar examination in the Global North is emphasized. The article discusses remaining knowledge gaps and argues that normative understandings overlook limited and potentially contradicting evidence on the complexities of the relationship between gender and water.

The role of piped water supplies in advancing health, economic development, and gender equality in rural communities

James C. Winter et al.

Summary: In rural areas of sub-Saharan Africa, households often rely on distant water sources, managed primarily by women and girls, but implementing piped water systems can result in time savings, increased water consumption, enhanced productivity, and improved overall household well-being.

'Menstruation means impurity': multilevel interventions are needed to break the menstrual taboo in Nepal

Subash Thapa et al.

Summary: In rural areas of Nepal, there is a prevalent menstrual taboo that hinders the effectiveness of interventions aimed at addressing it. Factors such as reluctance from local stakeholders, stigma faced by women abandoning chhaupadi, poverty, illiteracy, and resistance from community leaders contribute to the limited success of these interventions. Multilevel, multisectoral interventions with active community participation could be more effective in breaking the menstrual taboo and improving menstrual health and hygiene practices in this context.

Exploring gendered change: concepts and trends in gender equality assessments

Jess MacArthur et al.

Summary: This paper reviews recent investigations of gender equality from development-related academic literature, revealing a breadth of disciplinary perspectives but limited research on gender equality dynamics involving men and boys. Exploration of theoretical foundations identifies four conceptualizations of gendered change, each reflecting different disciplines, actors, and interests in the gender and development space. By critically reflecting on feminist principles, future studies can transcend narrower empowerment framings and contribute to gender transformative development goals.

Empowerment in water, sanitation and hygiene index

Sarah Dickin et al.

Summary: Water, sanitation, and hygiene services are crucial for women's empowerment and gender equality. The Empowerment in Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene Index (EWI) is a novel survey-based tool designed to measure agency, participation, and empowerment in the water and sanitation sector. By enabling measurement of women's empowerment, practitioners and policymakers can identify and incorporate more targeted strategies to address gender disparities and promote empowerment.
