This study aims to address this gap by providing practical and tested qualitative assessment guidance for programme teams in the Asia-Pacific region, with the goal of strengthening the future use of qualitative tools in programming.

The water, sanitation and hygiene gender equality measure (WASH-GEM): Conceptual foundations and domains of change

Summary: This article introduces a recently developed quantitative measure of gender equality in WASH - the water, sanitation and hygiene gender equality measure (WASH-GEM) - and outlines the key challenges faced in its development. The authors developed the WASH-GEM through a collaborative process informed by a feminist perspective, literature review, pilot implementation, and partner engagement. They discuss the important considerations in the design of quantitative measures of social change, and define the five domains of measurement for the WASH-GEM. Reflecting on the design of the WASH-GEM, the article contributes to the discourse on methodological challenges and imperatives in measuring complex social change.

PRISMA2020: An R package and Shiny app for producing PRISMA 2020-compliant flow diagrams, with interactivity for optimised digital transparency and Open Synthesis

Summary: We have developed a user-friendly tool for producing PRISMA 2020-compliant flow diagrams for users with coding experience and, importantly, for users without prior experience in coding by making use of Shiny. This free-to-use tool will make it easier to produce clear and PRISMA 2020-compliant systematic review flow diagrams. Significantly, users can also produce interactive flow diagrams for the first time, allowing readers of their reviews to smoothly and swiftly explore and navigate to further details of the methods and results of a review.

Summary: In rural areas of Nepal, there is a prevalent menstrual taboo that hinders the effectiveness of interventions aimed at addressing it. Factors such as reluctance from local stakeholders, stigma faced by women abandoning chhaupadi, poverty, illiteracy, and resistance from community leaders contribute to the limited success of these interventions. Multilevel, multisectoral interventions with active community participation could be more effective in breaking the menstrual taboo and improving menstrual health and hygiene practices in this context.
