New Membrane Active Antibacterial and Antiviral Amphiphiles Derived from Heterocyclic Backbone of Pyridinium-4-Aldoxime

Doris Crncevic et al.

Summary: Research shows that the activity of cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), one of the most potent Quaternary ammonium salts (QAS), against resistant bacterial strains is decreasing. By structurally modifying the CPC structure and adding other biologically active functional groups, a series of QAS were synthesized. Although some of these candidates have lower antibacterial activity, they are not toxic to human cell lines.

Tricepyridinium-inspired QACs yield potent antimicrobials and provide insight into QAC resistance

Michelle A. Garrison et al.

Summary: Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are a large class of surfactants, consumer products, and disinfectants. The newly isolated QAC natural product tricepyridinium bromide shows potent inhibitory activity against S. aureus. Through a concise synthetic route, analogs of tricepyridinium have been generated with remarkable selectivity towards clinically-relevant Gram-positive bacteria and the ability to overcome drug resistance pathways.

In vitro inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 by commonly used disinfection products and methods

Guo Xiling et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of various disinfection products and methods on the inactivation of SARS-CoV-2 in the laboratory, revealing that chlorinated disinfectants, Di-N-decyl dimethyl ammonium bromide/chloride, ethanol, and heat are all effective in killing the virus. The response of SARS-CoV-2 to disinfectants is similar to that of SARS-CoV.

The mode of antibacterial action of quaternary N-benzylimidazole salts against emerging opportunistic pathogens

Doris Crncevic et al.

Summary: Quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) are antimicrobial agents with broad spectrum activity targeting bacterial membrane. In this study, QACs based on imidazole derivative N-benzylimidazole showed potent antimicrobial activity against pathogenic bacteria, especially against bacterial biofilms. The most promising compound, N-tetradecyl derivative (BnI-14), demonstrated low toxicity to healthy human cells, suggesting potential as a new antimicrobial agent.
