Structured surface wetting of a PTFE flow-cell for terahertz spectroscopy of proteins

Nicholas T. Klokkou et al.

Summary: A terahertz-compatible PTFE microfluidic flow-cell was fabricated for spectroscopic analysis of BSA, utilizing oxygen plasma treatments and milling to manipulate wettability for liquid confinement. PTFE's inert and bio-compatible properties make it ideal for sub-millimeter wavelength spectroscopy.

Molecular pathological recognition of freshly excised human glioma using terahertz ATR spectroscopy

Ning Mu et al.

Summary: This study analyzed glioma tissues using terahertz (THz) attenuated total reflectance (ATR) time-domain spectroscopy and found significant differences in THz parameters between different grades of tumor tissues. The THz absorption coefficient also increased with the increase of THz frequency. It was demonstrated that THz spectroscopy can effectively distinguish between IDH mutant and wild-type glioma tissues, providing a theoretical basis for the development of intraoperative real-time glioma recognition and diagnosis technology.

Effect of THz spectra of L-Arginine molecules by the combination of water molecules

Haiqing Wang et al.

Summary: This report investigates the THz spectra of L-arginine crystal, its hydrate, and aqueous solution by combining the sample cell with the THz-TDS system. The results show different absorption peaks at different frequencies, but the characteristic absorption spectrum of the solution is almost identical to that of free water. This approach provides a reliable means for detecting pathological changes in active molecules and tissues.

Label-free study on the effect of a bioactive constituent on glioma cells in vitro using terahertz ATR spectroscopy

Y. U. N. S. H. E. N. G. LIAO et al.

Summary: In this study, we demonstrate the use of terahertz time-domain attenuated total reflection spectroscopy to evaluate the effect of bioactive constituents on living glioma cells. The results show that the THz absorption coefficient of glioma cells increases with ginsenoside Rg3 concentration, indicating a deterioration in cellular state. These findings are supported by cell growth inhibition rate measurements and cellular morphological changes observed with fluorescence microscopy. The technique has potential for assessing the efficacy of bioactive constituents and screening cell-targeted drugs.

Terahertz spectroscopy for quantification of free water and bound water in leaf

Ziyi Zang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a THz spectroscopic method for quantitatively detecting the free water content (FWC) and bound water content (BWC) in plant leaves. Experimental verification using samples from different plant species shows good consistency between the THz-based method and traditional methods, with significantly improved efficiency for quantitative detection. THz-based monitoring also demonstrates unique advantages in estimating plant branch activity, opening up possibilities for broader applications in physiological experiments and agricultural management.

A novel THz molecule-selective sensing strategy in aqueous environments: THz-ATR spectroscopy integrated with a smart hydrogel

Jie Zhou et al.

Summary: This study utilized THz spectroscopy to detect hydration changes induced by glucose in smart hydrogels, enabling label-free and selective detection of aqueous glucose. The method showed increased absorption coefficient and hydration state with higher glucose concentrations, surpassing individual THz-ATR devices in sensitivity, selectivity, and reusability for aqueous glucose sensing. Additionally, this strategy may offer an alternative option for selective detection of various aqueous molecules using THz spectroscopy.

Spectroscopy of excised skin patches exposed to THz and far-IR radiation

Alireza Lajevardipour et al.

Summary: The study found that products containing moisturizing ingredients such as glycerol and sorbitol have significant absorption characteristics in the far-infrared range, while sunscreen ingredients have relatively low absorbance rates. Components like melanin and collagen in dehydrated skin samples also show significant absorption properties, but not as important as moisturizing agents.
