Multiband Chiral Metasurface for Asymmetric Reflection and Transmission of Circularly Polarized Waves

Sayan Sarkar et al.

Summary: This letter introduces an ultrathin planar bilayered chiral metasurface that demonstrates direction dependent reflection and transmission within five frequency bands, suitable for C, X, and Ku microwave band applications. The metasurface acts as a metamirror within these bands, maintaining the handedness of circularly polarized waves for both incident and reflected waves. With stable response for incident angles up to 45 degrees in the first four bands and 30 degrees in the last band, it remains useful even for oblique incidence.

Giant 2D-chiroptical response in an achiral metasurface integrated with black phosphorus

Yali Zeng et al.

Summary: In this work, a black phosphorus achiral metasurface was proposed and the chiroptical response arising from extrinsic 2D-chirality in the mid-infrared regime was theoretically studied. The achiral metasurface is composed of a monolayer black phosphorus sheet sandwiched by a silver ring array and dielectric spacer stacking on a silver substrate. It was found that the achiral metasurface exhibits giant circular conversion dichroism (CCD) at oblique incidence due to the cooperative interaction between the BP anisotropic surface plasmon modes and localized surface plasmons in the metal rings. The chiroptical response can be dynamically modulated by controlling the doping concentration of BP, and a multiband phenomenon for CCD response occurs when tuning the thickness of the spacer. The proposed hybrid achiral metasurface provides more flexible opportunities for applications such as active polarization modulators, biosensors, and chiral detection.

Lattice-plasmon-induced asymmetric transmission in two-dimensional chiral arrays

N. Apurv Chaitanya et al.

Summary: Asymmetric transmission in chiral plasmonic metasurfaces can be achieved by controlling the scattering of plasmonic nanoparticles. This effect is caused by an unbalanced excitation of lattice modes by circularly polarized light of opposite handedness. Only nonzero diffraction orders contribute to this effect.

Dynamic control of reflective chiral terahertz metasurface with a new application developing in full grayscale near field imaging

Jitao Li et al.

Summary: A reflective chiral THz metasurface design utilizing monolayer graphene on low resistance Si substrate for controlling chiral properties effectively. Dynamic control of THz reflection can induce state switch between 'On' and 'Off' for applications like vortex focusing and near field imaging. Development of full grayscale near field imaging application allows for displaying full grayscale details unlike traditional near field imaging.

Mutual circular polarization conversions in asymmetric transmission and reflection modes by three-layer metasurface with gold split-rings

Zhe Shen et al.

Summary: The paper presents a circular polarization converter composed of gold split-rings and a Si3N4 substrate, suitable for both transmission and reflection modes with efficient circular polarization conversion capabilities. The operating band of the metasurface can be adjusted continuously and linearly by changing the refractive index of the substrate, with potential importance for communication applications and other fields.

A THz graphene metasurface for polarization selective virus sensing

M. Amin et al.

Summary: A novel method utilizing the chirality of highly sensitive graphene plasmonic metasurfaces is proposed to characterize the complex refractive indexes of viruses by detecting the polarization state of the reflected electric fields in the THz spectrum. The method exploits chiral surface currents to couple linearly polarized incident fields to circularly polarized reflected fields, resulting in unique polarization states in the far-field with ellipticity values that change rapidly with the analyte's refractive index. The method demonstrates potential for virus characterization with simpler instrumentation compared to traditional spectroscopic methods.
