Two-Dimensional Polymers and Polymerizations

Austin M. Evans et al.

Summary: Synthetic chemists have developed various methods to synthesize molecules, polymers, and networks, but have long lacked the ability to prepare two-dimensional polymers from designed monomers. Recent advances in polymerization strategies and characterization methods have enabled the realization of covalently linked macromolecular sheets. Three predominant 2D polymerization strategies have emerged, producing 2DPs as either monolayers or multilayer assemblies.

Thickness-Dependent Mechanical Failure in Thin Films of Glassy Polymer Bidisperse Blends

Tianren Zhang et al.

Summary: The addition of diluent polymers leads to thinner polymer films becoming more brittle, and the dependence of mechanical properties on thickness is weak when the film is larger than 20 sigma. Furthermore, there is a competing effect between the free surface and entanglement network, contributing to different mechanical behaviors in films of different thicknesses.

Mechanical Size Effect of Freestanding Nanoconfined Polymer Films

Guorui Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a significant mechanical stiffening effect in ultrathin polymer films at the nanoscale is reported using atomic force microscopy deflection measurements. The stiffening mechanism is attributed to extended chain conformations and entropic elasticity, with entropic contributions dominating over enthalpic contributions in chain stiffness, resulting in higher load-bearing capacity and stiffening at the nanoscale.

Irreversible synthesis of an ultrastrong two-dimensional polymeric material

Yuwen Zeng et al.

Summary: Polymers that extend covalently in two dimensions have attracted recent attention as a means of combining the mechanical strength and in-plane energy conduction of conventional two-dimensional (2D) materials with the low densities, synthetic processability and organic composition of their one-dimensional counterparts. Here we demonstrate a homogenous 2D irreversible polycondensation that results in a covalently bonded 2D polymeric material that is chemically stable and highly processable. Further processing yields highly oriented, free-standing films that have a 2D elastic modulus and yield strength of 12.7 +/- 3.8 gigapascals and 488 +/- 57 megapascals, respectively. This synthetic route provides opportunities for 2D materials in applications ranging from composite structures to barrier coating materials.

Decoupling the Impact of Entanglements and Mobility on the Failure Properties of Ultrathin Polymer Films

R. Konane Bay et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of glassy polymer thin films change significantly as the film thickness decreases, which can be attributed to the reduction in interchain entanglements and the increase in molecular mobility at the film surface. Through experiments and simulations, the impact of entanglements and surface mobility on the failure behavior of glassy polymer films under confinement has been investigated. A semiempirical model has been proposed to capture the failure response in both experimental and simulated thin films.

Metal-organic frameworks and covalent organic frameworks as disruptive membrane materials for energy-efficient gas separation

A. Knebel et al.

Summary: This critical Review discusses the molecular sieving behavior of metal-organic framework (MOF) and covalent organic framework (COF) membranes, which differs from classical zeolite membranes. MOFs and COFs offer synthetic access to a wide range of structures and tailor-made molecular gates. The controllable gas transport and compatibility with polymers make MOFs and COFs suitable for mixed-matrix membranes. The ability to react to stimuli allows for exploitation of the non-ideality of molecular sieving properties in a novel research direction.
