Vibrational modes with long mean free path and large volumetric heat capacity drive higher thermal conductivity in amorphous zeolitic imidazolate Framework-4

Yanguang Zhou et al.

Summary: Recent experiments indicate that the thermal conductivity of amorphous metal-organic frameworks can be higher than their crystalline counterparts due to higher atomic number density. The study shows that amorphous ZIF-4 has longer mean free path vibrations and increased volumetric heat capacity compared to crystalline ZIF-4, leading to a potentially 1.7 times higher thermal conductivity. Both amorphous and crystalline ZIF-4 exhibit weak temperature-dependent thermal conductivity, attributed to different structural characteristics and heat carrier properties.

Ultrahigh Thermal Conductivity of θ-Phase Tantalum Nitride

Ashis Kundu et al.

Summary: This study provides new insights into heat conduction in semimetallic solids, revealing that semimetallic theta-phase tantalum nitride (theta-TaN) has an ultrahigh thermal conductivity. Phonons are found to be the main heat carriers, and the high thermal conductivity relies on a combination of factors.

Crystal symmetry based selection rules for anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering from a group theory formalism

Runqing Yang et al.

Summary: Anharmonic phonon-phonon scattering plays a crucial role in heat conduction in solids. By applying a formalism based on group theory to symmetry-based scattering selection rules, the influence of crystal symmetry on lattice thermal conductivity is quantified and potential routes to engineer heat conduction by tuning crystal symmetry are suggested.
