Membrane design for non-aqueous redox flow batteries: Current status and path forward

Michelle L. Lehmann et al.

Summary: Redox flow batteries, especially nonaqueous redox flow batteries (NARFB), are promising technologies for large-scale and long-duration energy storage. However, NARFBs still face technical challenges such as the lack of high-performance membranes, low solubility of redox materials, and poor cycling efficiencies. This article reviews the design of NARFB membranes and the factors influencing their properties, providing insights for developing next-generation membranes for NARFB. Challenges, target metrics, and future perspectives for NARFBs are also summarized.

Ternary NiCoFe nanosheets for oxygen evolution in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis

Alaa Y. Faid et al.

Summary: Tuning the activity of nickel-based catalysts and understanding the interaction between electrolytes and ionomers in the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is crucial for improving anion exchange membrane (AEM) water electrolyzers. In this study, the OER activity of multimetallic Ni0.6Co0.2Fe0.2 was investigated, and dynamic structural changes were tracked using in-situ Raman spectroscopy and compared to other Ni catalysts. The effects of KOH concentration, KOH purity, ionomer type, and electrolyte with organic cations were evaluated.

Ionomer Optimization for Water Uptake and Swelling in Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzer: Hydrogen Evolution Electrode

Garrett Huang et al.

Summary: Green hydrogen produced through anion exchange membrane water electrolysis is a promising, low-cost chemical storage solution that requires a balance between ionic conductivity, water uptake, and ionomer swelling in the ACI to improve the performance of AEM-based devices. Higher IEC ACIs with light crosslinking are preferred in the HER electrode to fine-tune water uptake and ionomer swelling for optimal cell performance and reduced operating voltages.

Characterizing polymer structure with small-angle neutron scattering: A Tutorial

Yuan Wei et al.

Summary: Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) is a powerful technique widely used in studying polymer materials, providing information on their size, shape, and structure as well as associated thermodynamic quantities. Understanding the unique advantages and principles of neutron scattering measurements of soft materials is essential for proper experiment design and result interpretation, potentially requiring the construction of new scattering models. This tutorial aims to guide new and prospective users in interpreting SANS measurements of polymers, focusing on standard plots, models, and methods for quickly constructing new models.

Ami C. Yang-Neyerlin et al.

Summary: A series of spirocyclic copolymer membranes with varying ion exchange capacities were studied to investigate their impact on in situ fuel cell performance and stability. The results showed that performance losses were primarily related to increasing mass transport losses. Microscopy studies revealed that carbon corrosion and Pt nanoparticle growth significantly affected membrane performance.

Performance and Durability of Pure-Water-Fed Anion Exchange Membrane Electrolyzers Using Baseline Materials and Operation

Grace A. Lindquist et al.

Summary: Green hydrogen produced by water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity can replace fossil fuels. Anion-exchange-membrane (AEM) electrolyzers offer advantages of commercial proton-exchange-membrane systems with the use of less expensive materials and catalysts. Limited research and development in AEM electrolyzers due to lack of accessible materials and difficulty in comparing results, but using commercially available materials can provide a high-performance baseline for future development.

Multiblock Copolymer Anion-Exchange Membranes Derived from Vinyl Addition Polynorbornenes

Ryan Selhorst et al.

Summary: Block copolymers have shown promise in ion-exchange membranes due to their ability to phase separate into well-defined nanostructures, promoting transport. Conductivity of multiblock copolymers was higher than statistical copolymers, likely due to increased surface-to-volume ratio improving connectedness of ionic domains. Water uptake of copolymers depended on the number and order of blocks.
