The numbers of fungi: are the most speciose genera truly diverse?

Chitrabhanu S. Bhunjun et al.

Summary: Fungi play important roles in ecosystems, but their diversity is still uncertain. The importance of DNA-based methods for species identification and differentiation has been demonstrated. Many new species have been discovered in understudied regions and habitats in recent studies.

Forecasting the number of species of asexually reproducing fungi (Ascomycota and Basidiomycota)

Nalin N. Wijayawardene et al.

Summary: Asexually reproducing fungi play significant roles in ecosystems and have implications for plant and animal health, food production, biotechnology, and medicine. However, the diversity and extent of asexually reproducing taxa are not well-known. Recent reports suggest that there may be more asexual fungi than sexually-reproducing ones. Evaluating the diversity of different types of fungi, such as speciose and pleomorphic taxa, as well as those from less studied life modes and biodiversity-rich areas, is necessary to obtain more reliable estimates.

Microfungi associated with ornamental palms: Byssosphaeria phoenicis sp. nov. (Melanommataceae) and Pseudocoleophoma rhapidis sp. nov. (Dictyosporiaceae) from south China

Nuwan D. Kularathnage et al.

Summary: The health and attractiveness of ornamental plants are crucial in gardening and horticulture as they influence the economical and ornamental value of the plants. In this study, microfungi associated with dead petioles of dwarf date palm and living leaves of lady palm from Guangzhou, China were collected and investigated. Based on morphological comparison and multi-locus phylogeny, two new species, Byssosphaeria phoenicis and Pseudocoleophoma rhapidis, were introduced. Pathogenicity testing confirmed that P. rhapidis causes leaf spots on lady palm, reducing the aesthetic value of the plants.

Summary: This paper presents an updated classification of the Kingdom Fungi, including fungus-like taxa and fossil fungi. It provides detailed notes for newly introduced taxa and changes made since the previous outline. The paper discusses the latest taxonomic changes in Basidiomycota and broadly explores the classification of Mycosphaerellales. It also discusses problematic genera in Glomeromycota based on phylogenetic analysis.

Remotididymella ageratinae sp. nov. and Remotididymella anemophila sp. nov., two novel species isolated from the invasive weed Ageratina adenophora in PR China

Ai-Ling Yang et al.

Summary: The study found that Ageratina adenophora can accumulate diverse pathogens from surrounding native plants, including foliar fungal communities and canopy air fungi. Two new Remotididymella species were discovered in leaf spots of Ag. adenophora and canopy air, confirming them as new species belonging to Remotididymella.

Pattern-recognition receptors are required for NLR-mediated plant immunity

Minhang Yuan et al.

Summary: The plant immune system consists of pattern-triggered immunity (PTI) and effector-triggered immunity (ETI), which are activated by different mechanisms and involve distinct signaling cascades. PTI is triggered by microbial patterns via cell surface receptors, while ETI is activated by pathogen effector proteins via intracellular receptors.

Cryptic diversity found in Didymellaceae from Australian native legumes

Elizabeth C. Keirnan et al.

Summary: This study focused on the Ascochyta blight and leaf spot diseases of legumes in southern Australia, revealing that Ascochyta koolunga was only detected on field peas. Additionally, five novel Didymellaceae species were isolated from Australian native legumes, with three new host-pathogen associations identified.

What are fungal species and how to delineate them?

K. W. Thilini Chethana et al.

Summary: Defining and recognizing fungal species has long been a controversial issue, with over 30 species criteria proposed since Darwin's origin of species. Phylogenetic analyses based on multiple loci are widely used, but can mask discordances among fungal groups. In order to delimit fungal species, phylogenetic and phenotypic coherence, as well as the timing of events leading to speciation, need to be considered.

Integrative approaches for species delimitation in Ascomycota

Sajeewa S. N. Maharachchikumbura et al.

Summary: Disturbances caused by human activities result in biodiversity loss and call for more effective ways to discover and delimit species. The paper reviews the main approaches used to delimit species in the phylum Ascomycota, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of each species concept. The advancement in phylogenetic methods has increased the rate of species discovery, but challenges such as gene tree heterogeneity still hinder species delimitation in low-rank phylogenies.

What is a species in fungal plant pathogens?

Ruvishika S. Jayawardena et al.

Summary: Scientific names are crucial for communicating knowledge about fungi and fungus-like organisms, especially in the field of plant pathology. While traditional identification of species was based on morphology, there is now a shift towards molecular phylogenetic reconstructions for more accurate species delimitation.
