National Adherence to Guidelines for Antimicrobial Prophylaxis for Patients Undergoing Radical Cystectomy

Megan Prunty et al.

Summary: This study assessed adherence to antibiotic prophylaxis guidelines among patients undergoing radical cystectomy with ileal conduit and found that only 28% of patients received guidelines-based prophylaxis. Extended duration of antibiotic use was also observed in 37% of patients. Adherence to guidelines was associated with a lower risk of infectious complications, suggesting the need for improvement in guideline adherence.

Novel Antibiotic-Irrigating Wound Protector Reduces Infectious Complications in Robot-Assisted Radical Cystectomy with Extracorporeal Urinary Diversion

Albert H. Kim et al.

Summary: The use of an antibiotic-irrigating wound protector (AWP) reduces infectious complications after robotic radical cystectomy with extracorporeal urinary diversion (RCUD), particularly symptomatic urinary tract infections and bloodstream infections.

Preoperative immunonutrition and carbohydrate loading associated with improved bowel function after radical cystectomy

Sephalie Y. Patel et al.

Summary: The study compared two enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols, one included a preoperative nutrition protocol (PNP) and the other did not. The PNP group showed earlier return of bowel function after radical cystectomy compared to the control group, while complication rates and readmissions within 30 days were similar between the two groups.

Routine sterile glove and instrument change at the time of abdominal wound closure to prevent surgical site infection (ChEETAh): a pragmatic, cluster-randomised trial in seven low-income and middle-income countries

Dhruva Ghosh et al.

Summary: This study aimed to test the effectiveness of routine change of gloves and instruments before wound closure in reducing surgical site infection (SSI) in abdominal surgery. The results showed that routine change of gloves and instruments significantly reduced SSI rate, suggesting its wide implementation in surgical practice worldwide.

A perioperative management to reduce rate of urinary tract infection for patient underwent radical cystectomy with ileal conduit diversion

Yiqiu Wang et al.

Summary: The study showed that antibiotic prophylaxis based on postoperative urine and J-stent culture can significantly reduce the rate of UTI after ileal conduit surgery, leading to fewer complications. The conventional management is more likely to result in UTI compared to the modified management.

Short-term morbidity and mortality following radical cystectomy: a systematic review

Sophia Liff Maibom et al.

Summary: A systematic review was conducted to study short-term morbidity and mortality following radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, revealing high rates of complications and mortality. Age and comorbidity were identified as the best predictors for complications following RC. Randomized studies are needed to address interventions to reduce morbidity and mortality.
