Synergistic toughening on hybrid epoxy nanocomposites by introducing engineering thermoplastic and carbon-based nanomaterials

Kanokporn Tangthana-umrung et al.

Summary: In this study, the morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties of engineering thermoplastic modified epoxy were comprehensively studied by incorporating polyethersulfone (PESU) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNPs)/carbon nanotubes (CNTs). It was found that the presence of PESU improved thermal stability and mechanical properties, while the influence of GNPs and CNTs on fracture toughness was not significant.

Investigation of polyurethane toughened epoxy resins for composite cryotank applications. Part I: Phase separation phenomenon and cryogenic mechanical behaviors

Tao Wu et al.

Summary: This study explores the phase separation phenomenon and its relationship with room temperature and cryogenic mechanical behaviors in polyurethane toughened epoxy (PU/EP) resin systems used in aerospace engineering. The addition of polyurethane reduces tensile strength and modulus at room temperature, but has little effect on the mechanical properties at 90 K. It is also observed that phase separation occurs at a relatively high rate, and particle mergences and absorptions play significant roles in enlarging particle diameter.

Modeling and characterizations of mechanical behaviors of short carbon fiber and short glass fiber reinforced polyetherimide composites

Fang-Liang Guo et al.

Summary: A new finite element model (FEM) based on the classical random sequential adsorption algorithm with genetic algorithm (GA) was developed for efficient geometrical construction of short carbon fiber and short glass fiber reinforced polyetherimide (SCF/PEI and SGF/PEI) composites. Experimental tests and model predictions showed good agreement in terms of tensile properties, damage evolutions, and failure modes. The study quantitatively explored the effects of fiber volume fractions, orientations, and lengths on the strength and modulus of SCF/PEI and SGF/PEI composites.

Summary: This study investigates the hygrothermal aging behaviors of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy composites using a multiscale finite element method, and proposes a defect hypothesis to explain the generation of aging defects. Good agreement between experimental and numerical results is observed, showing the impact of hygrothermal aging on the mechanical properties of the composites.

Summary: The study found that EP can effectively enhance the mechanical strength of composites, with EP/HTPU1 exhibiting the best tensile properties of the EP matrix and CF/EP/HTPU2 showing the highest longitudinal tensile strength. The microstructure after curing and the interfacial adhesion between matrix and fibers strongly affect the tensile properties of composites.
