Improved mechanical properties in titanium matrix composites reinforced with quasi-continuously networked graphene nanosheets and in-situ formed carbides

Q. Yan et al.

Summary: A quasi-networked reinforcement structure in titanium matrix composites was achieved by uniformly coating Ti-6Al-4V spherical powders with a graphene nanosheet layer, leading to higher tensile strength and good ductility compared to randomly dispersed graphene nanosheets and TiC. The study provided a method to fabricate titanium matrix composites with high strength and good ductility by forming a networked hybrid reinforcement structure.

Hydrogen trapping and embrittlement in high-strength Al alloys

Huan Zhao et al.

Summary: As regulations on greenhouse gas emissions from transportation become stricter, it has become necessary to re-examine the materials used for vehicles. While high-strength aluminum alloys commonly used in aircrafts can help reduce the weight of automobiles, they are prone to environmental degradation. Hydrogen 'embrittlement' is often considered the main cause of this degradation, but the exact mechanisms behind this failure are not well understood due to the challenges in analyzing hydrogen at the atomic scale. In this study, near-atomic-scale analysis of hydrogen trapped in second-phase particles and at grain boundaries in a high-strength aluminum alloy was performed. These observations guided atomistic ab initio calculations which revealed that the co-segregation of alloying elements and hydrogen promotes grain boundary decohesion, and the strong partitioning of hydrogen into the second-phase particles removes solute hydrogen from the matrix, thus preventing hydrogen embrittlement. This research advances our understanding of hydrogen-assisted embrittlement in aluminum alloys and highlights the role of hydrogen traps in reducing cracking and guiding new alloy design.

In-situ synthesis of reduced graphene oxide/aluminium oxide nanopowders for reinforcing Ti-6Al-4V composites

H. Xue et al.

Summary: Carbon nanomaterials are widely used to strengthen metal matrix composites, but the issue of severe aggregation hinders their performance. In this study, reduced graphene oxides were decorated with aluminium oxide nanoparticles using an in-situ co-precipitation method and introduced into a Ti-6Al-4 V matrix. The resulting composites exhibited improved strength and refined grain size due to the uniform dispersion of nanoparticles. Increasing the content of nanoparticles enhanced the strength of the composites while slightly decreasing the elongation. The fracture morphology was a mixture of cleavage fracture and ductile fracture.

Insights into in-situ TiB/dual-phase Ti alloy interface and its high load-bearing capacity

Qi An et al.

Summary: In this study, the interface characteristics and properties of α-Ti/β-Ti/TiB system were thoroughly investigated using high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), ab-initio calculations, and indentation tests. The results show that the TiB/β-Ti interface has a low interface energy and a high adhesion strength, while the TiB/α-Ti interface has a relatively high interface energy but still maintains a fairly high adhesion strength. Further analysis reveals that the homogeneous nucleation of α-Ti within the β-Ti phase is energetically preferred in the TiB-reinforced Ti6Al4V composite. Indentation tests confirm a significantly enhanced load-bearing capacity in dual-phase Ti6Al4V alloys due to the strong interfacial bonding achieved by in-situ formed TiB reinforcements.

Influential mechanisms on interface bonding of hot-rolled TB9/TC4 laminated composites

Qianyun Yan et al.

Summary: In this study, high-strength and good-toughness laminated composites were successfully manufactured by high temperature rolling. It was found that the plastic deformation and recrystallization at the edge position of the composites were greater than that at the center position. The center position showed better bonding quality than the edge position. Increasing the reduction improved the interface bonding and reduced the positional quality difference. Higher bonding strength and tensile strength were achieved with larger rolling reduction. Finite element simulation revealed the formation mechanism of holes and the influential mechanisms on the positional difference in interface bonding quality.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V based laminated composites at various rolling reductions

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: The effect of hot rolling on laminated metal matrix composites was investigated. It was found that after rolling, the layer thickness and matrix grain size decreased significantly, and the tensile strength and deformation ability improved. Increasing rolling reduction resulted in a decrease in deformation ability while the strength remained almost unchanged. Additionally, increasing rolling reduction caused interface decohesion and crack formation.

Synergetic enhancement of strength and ductility for titanium-based composites reinforced with nickel metallized multi-walled carbon nanotubes

L. L. Dong et al.

Summary: A new methodology is proposed to enhance both ductility and tensile strength of titanium matrix composites by ball milling Ti-6Al-4V powders with Ni decorated multi-walled carbon nanotubes and then sintering the composites powders using spark plasma sintering. The enhanced strength in composites is mainly attributed to the interfacial structures for effectively enhanced load transfer capability between MWCNTs@Ni and Ti matrix. This study provides a new methodology of fabricating metal matrix composites with both high strength and good ductility.

Annealed microstructure dependent corrosion behavior of Ti-6Al-3Nb-2Zr-1Mo alloy

Baoxian Su et al.

Summary: Annealing at higher temperatures increases the corrosion resistance of Ti80 alloy by forming a higher volume fraction of beta phase, which is more resistant to corrosion than alpha phase due to higher content of Nb, Mo, and Zr. However, severe corrosion is observed in 5 M HCl solution due to the breakdown of oxide films and micro-galvanic couple effects. These findings provide insights for designing Ti alloys with high corrosion resistance through microstructural optimization.

Strain rate sensitivity of titanium matrix composites: In the presence of laminated structure

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the SRS of the thick-layer-laminated Ti-TiB/Ti-6.58Al-1.76Zr-0.89Mo-1.04V composites decreased with increasing plastic strain, and the strength and SRS both followed the rule of mixture. The strain hardening exponent of the laminated composites was higher than TiB/TA15 but lower than pure Ti, and stress redistribution in the necking area enhanced the post-necking deformation ability of the laminated composites.
