Factors Associated with Compliance to the Hospital Price Transparency Final Rule: a National Landscape Study

John Xuefeng Jiang et al.

Summary: The Hospital Price Transparency Final Rule requires hospitals to post machine-readable files with commercial negotiated prices, aiming to promote price competition and affordability of care. However, as of June 1, 2021, 55% of hospitals had not complied, with wide variations across states and hospital regions. Compliance was associated with IT preparedness, hospital type, size, and market competition level. Compliant hospitals tend to have better resources and expertise for implementation, indicating that compliance costs may be a barrier for some hospitals.

The utilization of bariatric surgery was higher in the fourth quarter compared to the first quarter of each year.

Health Care Price Transparency in Ophthalmology

Sean T. Berkowitz et al.

Summary: Despite recent legislation aimed at increasing price transparency in healthcare, current standard charges for ophthalmologic procedures still lack clarity, with significant variability between hospitals that is not attributed to geographical cost differences. This ambiguity in pricing may disproportionately affect vulnerable and uninsured patients, indicating a need for further legislation to clarify pricing standards and provide more transparent cost information for consumers.

Concordance of Disclosed Hospital Prices With Total Reimbursements for Hospital-Based Care Among Commercially Insured Patients in the US

Michal Horny et al.

Summary: This study found that independent practitioners were frequently involved in providing shoppable hospital-based care and their reimbursement may constitute a significant portion of total costs of care. The disclosed hospital reimbursement was usually not correlated with total cost of care, limiting the potential benefits of the hospital price transparency rule for improving consumer decision-making.
