Adaptive dose escalated radiotherapy in oropharyngeal cancers: a treatment planning feasibility study

Laura Grocutt et al.

Summary: This study assessed the feasibility of adaptive and dose-escalated radiotherapy for patients with poor prognosis squamous cell cancer of the oropharynx. The results showed that it is possible to escalate the dose to the gross tumor volume without significantly increasing the doses to surrounding areas or organs at risk.

Evaluation of Optimal Threshold of Neutrophil-Lymphocyte Ratio and Its Association With Survival Outcomes Among Patients With Head and Neck Cancer

S. J. Ma et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the optimal threshold of neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) as a prognostic biomarker for patients with head and neck cancer. The results showed that a high NLR was associated with worse survival, and patients with substantial disease burden and poor performance status were more likely to have a high NLR.

Reduced-Dose Radiation Therapy for HPV-Associated Oropharyngeal Carcinoma (NRG Oncology HN002)

Sue S. Yom et al.

Summary: Reducing radiation treatment dose in patients with good-risk human papillomavirus-associated oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma (OPSCC) could potentially improve the quality of life. The study showed that reducing radiation dose could achieve disease control and survival rates equivalent to standard chemoradiation.

20 pack-year smoking history as strongest smoking metric predictive of HPV-positive oropharyngeal cancer outcomes

Stephanie Y. Chen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the association between smoking and survival in HPV-related OPSCC. The findings suggest that a smoking history of >20 pack-years is strongly associated with worse survival and recurrence.

Summary: The study showed that dose-escalated intensity-modulated radiotherapy did not improve locoregional control in patients with laryngeal or hypopharyngeal cancer, and led to a higher incidence of pharyngeal mucositis compared to standard dose IMRT.

Machine Learning Incorporating Host Factors for Predicting Survival in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma Patients

Han Yu et al.

Summary: Predicting the overall survival of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma patients remains challenging, but host factors can enhance the performance of prediction models. Proper dimension reduction of host factors before incorporating them into machine learning models is crucial for accurate risk assessment and targeted care for high-risk patients.

Precision Radiotherapy: Reduction in Radiation for Oropharyngeal Cancer in the 30 ROC Trial

Nadeem Riaz et al.

Summary: Functional imaging using PET to assess tumor hypoxia can guide safe de-escalation of radiotherapy dose to 30Gy, leading to reduced toxicity and improved treatment outcomes. Molecular determinants of response, such as DNA repair defects, can be identified through advanced sequencing techniques and may play a key role in predicting patient response to treatment. Personalized chemoradiotherapy based on intratreatment imaging holds promise for significant reduction in radiotherapy intensity.
