Direct Oral Anticoagulants and Warfarin for Atrial Fibrillation Treatment: Rural and Urban Trends in Medicare Beneficiaries

Faye L. Norby et al.

Summary: Using Medicare data, the study found that patients in rural areas were more likely to initiate anticoagulation therapy after being diagnosed with AF, but were less likely to initiate DOACs compared to urban patients.

Non-persistence to Oral Anticoagulation Treatment in Patients with Non-valvular Atrial Fibrillation in the USA

Amol D. Dhamane et al.

Summary: The study compared the risk of persistence with oral anticoagulants among patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). The results showed differences in medication persistence across different OAC agents, even after accounting for clinical events. It is important for clinicians and patients to consider these differences, as non-persistence to OAC therapy is associated with thromboembolic complications.

Heart Rhythm Society Atrial Fibrillation Centers of Excellence Study: A survey analysis of stakeholder practices, needs, and barriers

Roopinder K. Sandhu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to understand the current practices, needs, and potential barriers to implementing optimal care for patients with atrial fibrillation (AF). The surveys found that standardized protocols and care pathways were not commonly used in emergency departments or inpatient settings. All stakeholders agreed that stroke prevention was a top priority, but bleeding risk was the most frequent barrier to initiating treatment. Patients emphasized the importance of education on modifiable causes and reducing stroke risk. Less than half of the healthcare systems tracked AF patients or treatment status. The most common barriers to implementing AF centers of excellence were administrative support and cost.
