Quantum Magnetism and Topological Superconductivity in Yu-Shiba-Rusinov Chains

Jacob F. Steiner et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that dilute Yu-Shiba-Rusinov (YSR) chains are not only promising for realizing Majorana end states, but also a versatile platform for quantum magnetism and correlated electron dynamics.

Precursors of Majorana modes and their length-dependent energy oscillations probed at both ends of atomic Shiba chains

Lucas Schneider et al.

Summary: Majorana modes are highly non-local quantum states with non-Abelian exchange statistics, localized at the two ends of finite-size 1D topological superconductors. Experimental evidence has been observed for isolated Majorana modes with zero-energy conductance peaks at both ends, consistent with precursors evolving into protected states by a topological gap in chains of sufficient length.

Observation of Cooper pairs in a mesoscopic two-dimensional Fermi gas

Marvin Holten et al.

Summary: In this article, researchers successfully observed Cooper pairs directly in a mesoscopic two-dimensional Fermi gas. Using an imaging scheme, they extracted the full in situ momentum distribution of a strongly interacting Fermi gas with single-particle and spin resolution. They found Cooper pair correlations at the Fermi surface and observed that increasing attractive interactions led to the gradual formation of deeply bound molecules that broke up the Fermi surface.

Pairing patterns in polarized unitary Fermi gases above the superfluid transition

Felipe Attanasio et al.

Summary: We nonperturbatively study the pairing behavior in high-temperature polarized two-component Fermi gases and analyze the pair-momentum distribution and shot-noise correlations. The results suggest that the dominant pairing patterns above the superfluid transition also govern the formation of condensates in the low-temperature regime.

Heavy polarons in ultracold atomic Fermi superfluids at the BEC-BCS crossover: Formalism and applications

Jia Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, we investigate a system of a heavy impurity embedded in a paired two-component Fermi gas. By extending the functional determinant approach, we are able to understand the polaron physics in the system, including the effects of the pairing gap in the BCS superfluid.

Observation of Pauli Crystals

Marvin Holten et al.

Summary: The research reports on the direct observation of the Pauli exclusion principle in a continuous system of up to six particles in the ground state of a two-dimensional harmonic oscillator. The study found Pauli crystals as a manifestation of higher order correlations without any interactions present, laying the foundation for future studies of correlations in strongly interacting systems of many fermions.

Topological Shiba bands in artificial spin chains on superconductors

Lucas Schneider et al.

Summary: The study analyzes Bogoliubov quasiparticle interference in Mn chains constructed atom by atom on Nb(110), revealing the formation of multi-orbital Shiba bands, including one band with a topologically non-trivial p-wave gap. This work represents an important step towards experimentally determining topological phases in multi-orbital systems using only bulk electron band structure properties.

Signatures of the BCS-BEC crossover in the yrast spectra of Fermi quantum rings

Ulrich Ebling et al.

Summary: This study explores the properties of the lowest energy states with nonzero total momentum (yrast states) in the Hubbard model, focusing on spin-1/2 fermions with attractive on-site interaction in a quantum ring configuration at low density. The transition from 1D to 2D regime is investigated using Bethe ansatz and Full-Configuration-Interaction Quantum Monte Carlo method to examine the changes in yrast excitation spectrum and the impact of pairing. Additionally, fragmented condensation signatures for certain yrast states typically associated with dark solitons are identified.

Tunneling processes between Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states

A. Villas et al.

Summary: Recent experiments have demonstrated tunneling between YSR bound states at the atomic scale, allowing for the study of spin-dependent transport. A comprehensive theoretical study based on an Anderson model and nonequilibrium Green's function techniques has been presented to describe spin-dependent transport for an arbitrary strength of tunnel coupling. This theory can explain experimental observations of current peaks in the subgap region and predicts a variety of Andreev reflections in junctions with increasing transparency.
