Extreme Precipitation in China: A Review on Statistical Methods and Applications

Xuezhi Gu et al.

Summary: In recent years, global property losses and casualties caused by extreme precipitation and subsequent natural disasters, including floods and landslides, have become increasingly severe. China is deeply affected by these disasters. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the research progress, methods, and current status of extreme precipitation in China, aiming to contribute ideas for further research on extreme precipitation frequency analysis and its response to climate change and human activities.

Lag impacts of the anomalous July soil moisture over Southern China on the August rainfall over the Huang-Huai River Basin

Xuan Dong et al.

Summary: The study reveals significant regional differences in the impact of soil moisture on precipitation over eastern China during July and August. Wet soil in July can lead to increased rainfall over the Huang-Huai-River basin in August, while dry soil may cause the opposite effect. The interaction between soil moisture, atmospheric circulation, and water vapor transport plays a crucial role in influencing the regional precipitation patterns.

Observed Linkage between Tibetan Plateau Soil Moisture and South Asian Summer Precipitation and the Possible Mechanism

Waheed Ullah et al.

Summary: Understanding the thermal processes of the Tibetan Plateau is crucial in studying climate change, as it impacts summer precipitation in South Asia. This study found that variations in South Asian precipitation are significantly influenced by Tibetan Plateau soil moisture, with dry soil moisture leading to increased summer precipitation in the region. Through analyzing atmospheric data, it was suggested that soil moisture levels in the Tibetan Plateau can affect the energy balance and precipitation patterns in South Asia.

Summary: The study reveals that under different socioeconomic scenarios, intensity and frequency of extreme temperature and precipitation events over land are projected to increase. The intensity of the hottest days in extratropical regions is projected to increase more than in the tropics, while the frequency of extremely hot days is projected to increase more in tropical regions.

Spatial and Temporal Analysis of Rainfall and Drought Condition in Southwest Xinjiang in Northwest China, Using Various Climate Indices

Ahmad Ali Khan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the spatial and temporal variability of rainfall and found a decreasing trend in rainfall and an increasing trend in drought in the study area. The area, located in arid Southwest Xinjiang, is already endangered by these conditions, which are likely to worsen with decreasing rainfall. This research provides important information for decision makers to take proactive steps to mitigate the risks associated with increasing drought in the region.

Distinct impacts of spring soil moisture over the Indo-China Peninsula on summer precipitation in the Yangtze River basin under different SST backgrounds

Siguang Zhu et al.

Summary: This study found that the pre-summer soil moisture over the Indo-China Peninsula has a significant impact on summer precipitation in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River basin, depending on different sea surface temperature (SST) backgrounds. The different responses of the atmospheric circulations to soil moisture anomalies against different SST backgrounds lead to distinct impacts on the distribution of summer precipitation in the study area. Additionally, numerical experiments with the Community Earth System Model confirmed that a dry (wet) Indo-China Peninsula spring soil can significantly increase (decrease) summer precipitation in the following summer, with a stronger negative correlation in certain SST backgrounds.

Contrasting Effect of Soil Moisture on the Daytime Boundary Layer Under Different Thermodynamic Conditions in Summer Over China

Zhiqi Xu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the impact of soil moisture (SM) on the evolution of planetary boundary layer (PBL) in China, revealing a negative correlation between convective boundary layer (CBL) and neutral boundary layer (NBL) heights with SM, while a positive correlation exists for stable boundary layer (SBL) height. The standard deviation of CBL and NBL height shows a northwest high southeast low spatial pattern, with sensible heat flux playing a more significant role in dry areas.

Significant Land Contributions to Interannual Predictability of East Asian Summer Monsoon Rainfall

Pengfei Shi et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates significant improvements in simulating the interannual variations of East Asian summer monsoon (EASM) rainfall by using a weakly coupled data assimilation system to constrain soil moisture and soil temperature in a coupled climate model. Significant multi-year rainfall prediction skill over East China and Tibetan Plateau is also shown in hindcast simulations initialized with well-balanced states from the coupled simulation with data assimilation. The strong land-atmosphere coupling in large areas over China is attributed to the improvements in predicting EASM rainfall.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of soil moisture on the atmospheric boundary layer using a combination of global weather balloon soundings, satellite-observed soil moisture, and a coupled land-atmosphere model. The results reveal distinctive energy- and water-limited regimes at the landscape scale, showing significant differences in behavior between dry and wet conditions. The evidence highlights the crucial role of land-atmosphere coupling in accurate climate modeling and projections of climate change.

Summary: This study evaluated the historical hydrometeorological drought in the Soan River Basin in Pakistan from 1984-2015. It found that drought events were more frequent in the short term but with longer durations, and the drought indices showed a significant decreasing trend. The research also identified a positive relationship between the meteorological and hydrological drought indices.
