Trimetallic oxyhydroxides as active sites for large-current-density alkaline oxygen evolution and overall water splitting

Lei Chen et al.

Summary: A series of alkaline OER electrocatalysts were studied, and FeCoNi(S) exhibited excellent performance. Through experiments and calculations, it was determined that Ni(Fe,Co) trimetallic oxyhydroxides were the active sites for efficient OER. FeCoNi(S) also showed remarkable long-term stability as a bifunctional catalyst for water splitting.

Electrocatalysis Goes Nuts

Andrew R. Akbashev

Summary: Researchers often overlook the complexity and usability of nanoelectrocatalysts with outstanding performance, leading to a lack of meaningful interpretation and scientific insight in previous studies. This article suggests that experiments should be designed to minimize the complexity of electrode materials in order to obtain interpretable electrochemical responses. Greater recognition of the challenges in this field will help improve the quality of research in electrocatalysis.

Quasi-solid-state Zn-air batteries with an atomically dispersed cobalt electrocatalyst and organohydrogel electrolyte

Qichen Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a high-rate and robust performance is achieved in quasi-solid-state Zn-air batteries using a single-atom catalyst and an organohydrogel electrolyte. A cycling current density of 100 mA cm(-2) at 25 degrees C and a broad temperature adaptability of -60 to 60 degrees C are demonstrated.

Porous bimetallic cobalt-iron phosphide nanofoam for efficient and stable oxygen evolution catalysis

Shanfu Sun et al.

Summary: This study synthesizes a porous bimetallic cobalt-iron phosphide nanofoam and demonstrates its lower overpotential and outstanding stability. It is shown that the nanofoam undergoes surface reconstruction and forms highly active (CoxFe1-x)OOH. Theoretical calculations reveal that the optimized energy levels of the bimetal enhance the activity and balance the adsorption-desorption capacities for OER intermediates. This work offers a feasible strategy to enhance reaction activity and prolong the long-term stability of OER by constructing a porous bimetallic nanofoam.

Ferric ions leached from Fe-based catalyst to trigger the dynamic surface reconstruction of nickel foam for high-efficient OER activity

Gaowei Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a rod-like Fe2OF4 is used as the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrocatalyst loaded on a nickel foam support, showing high-efficient OER activity. It is found that partial ferric ions within Fe2OF4 can leach out and be electrochemically adsorbed on the surface of nickel foam, triggering dynamic surface reconstruction. Based on these findings, a promising method for preparing large-size, low-cost and high-performance OER electrodes is proposed.

Tuning the band (p and d) center and enhancing the active sites by nitrogen (N) doping on iridium diphosphide (IrP2) for accelerating pH-universal water electrolysis

Sanjib Baran Roy et al.

Summary: Developing efficient water electrolysis catalysts remains a challenge. In this study, we synthesized a nitrogen-doped noble metal iridium diphosphide (N-IrP2 @CC) catalyst on a carbon cloth substrate. The catalyst exhibited high catalytic activity due to the phosphorus-rich condition and nitrogen dopants, achieving a high water-splitting current density at low operation voltages.

iR drop correction in electrocatalysis: everything one needs to know!

Sengeni Anantharaj et al.

Summary: Direct current (DC) voltammetric techniques, despite being inferior to alternating current (AC) techniques and other advanced voltammetric techniques, have been widely used due to their simplicity. However, a major issue in controlled-potential DC techniques is the potential drop at the interface. Current literature contains numerous incorrect potential drop corrections due to the challenges in understanding and following the correct protocols.

Free-standing nanoporous NiMnFeMo alloy: An efficient non-precious metal electrocatalyst for water splitting

Hao Liu et al.

Summary: The study introduces a flexible and free-standing nano porous NiMnFeMo alloy with ultrahigh catalytic activity for both anode and cathode in electrochemical water splitting. The alloy exhibits excellent performance even at high current density and shows superior stability when used in a water electrolyzer. DFT calculations suggest that the catalyst's activity is attributed to the synergetic effect of solid solution elements.
