Using integrated models to analyze and predict the variance of diatom community composition in an agricultural area

Xiuming Sun et al.

Summary: With the increasing demand for assessing ecological status, understanding the relationship between planktic diversity and environmental factors is crucial. The study introduced a new index, the first ordination value from NMDS, to represent community similarity variance. Results highlighted antecedent precipitation index as the main hydrological variable and water temperature, Si2+, and PO4-P as key chemical controlling factors influencing diatom community variation in agricultural rivers. The generalized linear models showed better prediction for Shannon index and NMDS, emphasizing their importance in explaining the relationship between stream biota and environmental factors.

Homogenization of diatom assemblages is driven by eutrophication in tropical reservoirs*

Stefano Zorzal-Almeida et al.

Summary: Eutrophication leads to biotic homogenization in tropical reservoirs, with an increase in total beta diversity, no change in turnover with eutrophication, but a positive relationship between nutrient enrichment and the nestedness component.

Spatial and environmental factors contributing to phytoplankton biogeography and biodiversity in mountain ponds across a large geographic area

Chao Chang et al.

Summary: The study revealed distinct biogeographic patterns of phytoplankton in mountain ponds, with spatial factors predominantly influencing their distribution. Environmental factors and spatial factors together explained a significant portion of variation in phytoplankton community composition, highlighting the complex interactions shaping aquatic ecosystems.

Eutrophication alters bacterial co-occurrence networks and increases the importance of chromophoric dissolved organic matter composition

Lei Zhou et al.

Summary: Eutrophication impacts bacterial communities by providing nutrients and carbon sources. This study explored the influence of physicochemical conditions and CDOM composition on bacterial community variation across trophic gradients. Results showed changes in co-occurrence patterns, with higher importance of CDOM composition at moderate- and hyper-eutrophic sites. Furthermore, a significant negative correlation was found between community-level habitat niche breadths and protein-like components at eutrophic sites, indicating a strong relationship between biolabile protein-like compounds and habitat specialists in nutrient-rich lake systems.

Temporal and spatial variation in water quality in the Three Gorges Reservoir from 1998 to 2018

Rong Xiang et al.

Summary: The overall water quality of the Three Gorges Reservoir was good, but showed a slight decline before full impoundment. The low water level period had the worst water quality, and the midstream area exhibited the poorest water quality. Total nitrogen and total phosphorus were identified as key pollution indices.

Water quality variation in tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir from 2000 to 2015

Rong Xiang et al.

Summary: The study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in water quality of the Three Gorges Reservoir tributaries, revealing that the water quality was mainly affected by the mainstream backwater movement. Overall, the water quality of tributaries was good and showed an improving trend, with upstream tributaries having better water quality compared to downstream areas and estuaries.

Spatial and local environmental factors outweigh geo-climatic gradients in structuring taxonomically and trait-based b-diversity of benthic algae

Naicheng Wu et al.

Summary: Understanding the variation in biodiversity and its underlying drivers and mechanisms is crucial in biogeography and ecology. In the context of stream benthic algae, this study found that taxonomically based total beta-diversity was largely driven by turnover, while trait-based total beta-diversity was more driven by nestedness. Local environmental and spatial factors contributed more than geo-climatic variables to the total explained variation in beta-diversity.

Longitudinal transport timescales in a large dammed river - The Changjiang River

Jian Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the water age and residence time in the Yangtze River from upstream to downstream of the Three Gorges Dam, revealing that the presence of the dam significantly increases water age. Downstream of the dam, the longitudinal aging rate of water becomes discordant in an annual cycle, and the replenished discharge in dry season accelerates water transport.
