Antimicrobial stewardship by Australian community pharmacists: Uptake, collaboration, challenges, and needs

Summary: Community pharmacists are aware of the importance of appropriate antibiotic use but lack training and resources for antimicrobial stewardship activities. Improving GP receptiveness and establishing system structures for increased GP-pharmacist collaboration appear to be a priority to accelerate pharmacist-led antimicrobial stewardship implementation. Further research is needed to understand stakeholders' views on the feasibility of implementing evidence-based GP-pharmacist collaborative AMS approaches.

Analysis of the demographics and characteristics of the Australian pharmacist workforce 2013-2018: decreasing supply points to the need for a workforce strategy

Summary: According to recent data analysis, the pharmacy workforce in Australia has seen an increase in females and a trend towards hospital practice, but no change in geographic distribution. Compared to other health professions, the growth rate of pharmacists has been slower, with the older age group growing at a faster rate and the younger cohort showing a decrease in intention to remain in the pharmacy profession.
