Reduced tillage in organic farming affects soil organic carbon stocks in temperate Europe

M. Krauss et al.

Summary: Reduced tillage in organic farming can increase SOC stocks in surface layers, decrease them in intermediate layers, and increase them in deeper soil layers. The cumulative SOC stocks increased by 1.7% or 1.5 Mg ha-1 (0-50 cm, n = 9) and 3.6% or 4.0 Mg ha-1 (0-100 cm, n = 7) compared with ploughing. The estimated mean C sequestration rates were 0.09 and 0.27 Mg ha-1 yr-1, respectively.

Organic carbon stocks, quality and prediction in permafrost-affected forest soils in North Canada

Marcus Schiedung et al.

Summary: High-latitude soils store a large amount of global soil organic carbon (SOC). This study sampled and analyzed mineral forest soils in the Canadian Boreal and Taiga Plain, finding that continuous permafrost conditions have higher SOC stocks compared to discontinuous and sporadic permafrost conditions. The combination of mid-infrared spectroscopy and PLSR modeling was able to accurately predict SOC stocks.

Digital mapping of GlobalSoilMap soil properties at a broad scale: A review

Summary: Digital soil mapping (DSM) is increasingly used to deliver soil information efficiently. Research shows that while the number of DSM publications continues to grow exponentially, the majority focus on applications rather than methodology, with a particular emphasis on the mandatory soil properties for global soil mapping.

Summary: This study combines different prediction techniques into a single model based on an ensemble learning approach, aiming to improve the accuracy of soil organic carbon (SOC) prediction. The results show that the ensemble model predicts SOC more accurately than individual calibration techniques.

Digital mapping of soil organic carbon hotspots in nature conservation areas in the region of Flanders, Belgium

S. Ottoy et al.

Summary: This study developed and validated a digital soil mapping procedure to accurately assess the soil organic carbon (SOC) stock in nature conservation areas in Flanders, N. Belgium, and identified soil carbon hotspots. The results showed significant variations in SOC stocks within the conservation areas, influenced by factors such as soil type, vegetation type, groundwater level, and clay fraction. However, the study also found that local variability, uncertainties in input data, and unmapped elements can hinder the accurate estimation of SOC stocks and hotspots.

Spatial variation and distribution of soil organic carbon in an urban ecosystem from high-density sampling

Pingping Zhang et al.

Summary: This study collected soil samples in Xi'an City to investigate the spatial variations and distributions of soil organic carbon, identifying main driving factors of SOC density and comparing different interpolation methods in predicting spatial distributions of SOCD. The findings provided important insights into the global carbon cycle influenced by urban soils and serve as a critical guide to land management in urban areas.

Mapping soil organic carbon stocks and trends with satellite-driven high resolution maps over South Africa

Zander S. Venter et al.

Summary: Estimating and monitoring soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks is crucial for maintaining soil productivity and meeting climate change targets. Using satellite-driven machine learning, we mapped SOC stocks under natural vegetation in South Africa over 35 years, showing changes in SOC stocks and trends across different biomes.

Spatial variation and temporal decline (1985-2017) of soil organic carbon stocks (SOCS) in relation to land use types in Tombel area, South-West Cameroon

Cedrick Nguemezi et al.

Summary: The study assessed the spatial distribution and temporal decline of soil organic carbon in the Tombel area of Southwest Cameroon over 32 years, revealing a rapid expansion of agricultural and built-up areas leading to a decrease in total soil organic carbon. Results indicated that climatic and terrain attributes were the most important predictors of soil organic carbon distribution.

Similar importance of edaphic and climatic factors for controlling soil organic carbon stocks of the world

Zhongkui Luo et al.

Summary: The study found that climate and soil properties have similar contributions to global SOC stocks, but their importance varies in different soil depths. Individual soil properties play a more crucial role in SOC dynamics than climate, challenging the current climate-driven framework.
