The feasibility of autonomous low-emission ro-ro passenger shipping in the Adriatic Sea

Ivana Jovanovic et al.

Summary: Digitalization, artificial intelligence, and awareness of climate change are driving the rapid development in the transportation industry, with autonomous ships being considered more cost-effective and environmentally friendly than traditional manned vessels. Methanol and electricity-powered ships are found to be the best option environmentally and economically for all three routes, except for the renewable hydrogen-powered ship on the longest route. The study concludes that autonomous shipping offers ecological and economic benefits for various power options and ships.

Evaluation Simulator Platform for Extended Collision Risk of Autonomous Surface Vehicles

Anete Vagale

Summary: This paper proposes a method for extended collision risk assessment for paths generated by autonomous navigation algorithms. The method calculates risk factors, determines risk values using a fuzzy inference system, and obtains the extended collision risk assessment (ECRA) score using a root-mean-square method. The validation results show that the proposed method can detect risk scenarios and assign risk values effectively in most cases.

Summary: This study introduces a project on FOD ARV (autonomous and remotely-operated vehicle) conducted by the Hadal Science and Technology Research Center of Shanghai Ocean University. The research uses numerical simulations and experimental tests to investigate various subsystems and disciplines of the ARV. Additionally, the trials of the vehicle in lakes, the South China Sea, and the Mariana Trench are discussed. The study provides a design method for the novel three-body FOD ARV and extracts valuable lessons from the trials, regardless of success or failure.

Detecting Maritime Obstacles Using Camera Images

Byung-Sun Kang et al.

Summary: This study utilized the YOLOv5 model to detect aquaculture buoys and calculated the distances between the buoys and the camera using monocular and stereo vision. The results showed that monocular vision is more effective than stereo vision in detecting maritime obstacles and can be used as auxiliary sailing equipment along with radar.

Impact of carbon pricing on distributed energy systems planning

Andrea Bartolini et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of carbon pricing on the design of distributed energy systems, using Singapore as a case study. The results show that increasing carbon pricing can reduce environmental footprint but may also lead to increased primary energy consumption, especially when the cost of natural gas decreases.

Searching for the origins of the myth: 80% human error impact on maritime safety

Krzysztof Wrobel

Summary: There is a prevalent belief that humans are responsible for 80% of industrial accidents, including those in shipping, but there is limited concrete evidence to support this claim. Research shows that human errors indeed play a significant role in maritime accidents, but the widely accepted 80% contribution rate lacks strong substantiation.

Costs and Benefits of Autonomous Shipping-A Literature Review

Ewelina Ziajka-Poznanska et al.

Summary: The development of autonomous ship technology is receiving global attention, but in-depth cost and benefit estimation is still in its early stages. Current financial models for autonomous shipping are lacking, and there is significant uncertainty in cost estimates. Further research is needed to improve business models for operating autonomous ships.

Collision Avoidance Algorithm Based on COLREGs for Unmanned Surface Vehicle

Hyo-Gon Kim et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an algorithm for unmanned surface vehicles (USVs) to avoid collisions with opposing vessels based on COLREG rules. The algorithm predicts dangerous situations based on DCPA and TCPA, allowing USVs to avoid opponents using the dynamic window approach. Simulation results confirm that the proposed CCDWA complies with COLREG regulations.

Energy carbon emission reduction of China's transportation sector: An input-output approach

Yang Yu et al.

Summary: The study found that improving energy efficiency is a key factor in reducing carbon emissions in China's transportation sector, while the steady growth of demand for transportation across all industries is the main reason for carbon emission growth. Dynamic optimization of industrial structure can help reduce carbon emissions caused by demand effects, and reducing the proportion of low-carbon and high-carbon energy consumption structures also helps to restrain the growth of carbon emissions.

Towards 25,000 TEU vessels? A comparative economic analysis of ultra-large containership sizes under different market and operational conditions

Jiawei Ge et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the likelihood of shipping companies increasing the size of ultra-large containerships (ULCS) from 18,000 to 20,000 TEU to 25,000 TEU under different economic, operational, and environmental conditions. Findings show that while a further scale increase to a 25,000 TEU ULCS still generates economies of scale, very low freight rates and low load factors could affect the economic viability of such ships compared to smaller ULCSs.
