Numerical modelling of the migration direction of tidal sand waves over sand banks

S. Leenders et al.

Summary: Through numerical modeling, it was found that the influence of a sand bank on tidal flow causes tide-averaged horizontal flow towards the top of the sand bank, resulting in bidirectional migration of sand waves over the sand bank. Results from a complex model setup were comparable to field observations, indicating the potential for modeling migration patterns of sand wave fields for offshore wind farm development in areas with complex bathymetric environments.

Modeling tidal sand wave recovery after dredging:effect of different types of dredging strategies

G. H. P. Campmans et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the maintenance of navigation channels in shelf seas with tidal sand waves, highlighting the influence of different dredging strategies and depths on sand wave recovery. Results show that swiping results in the slowest recovery of sand waves, and larger dredging volumes lead to longer recovery times. Additionally, maintenance intervals are found to vary over time depending on dredging depth, emphasizing the importance of considering both height and shape of sand waves in maintenance strategies.

Modelling the Past and Future Evolution of Tidal Sand Waves

Janneke Krabbendam et al.

Summary: This study uses a state-of-the-art numerical morphodynamic model to hindcast and forecast observed offshore tidal sand waves. The model is found to perform well in hindcasts at four transects in the North Sea, with high skill scores and small errors in calculated bed levels compared to measurements.

Predicting Dominance of Sand Transport by Waves, Tides, and Their Interactions on Sandy Continental Shelves

E. King et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of wave and tidal interactions on sediment resuspension and transport on continental shelves, finding that wave-tide interactions dominate in most areas under energetic conditions. The interactions between waves and tides significantly affect sediment transport modes and seabed morphology in wave-dominated or tide-dominated regions.
