Coralligenous banks along the western and northern continental shelf of Sardinia Island (Mediterranean sea)

Giovanni De Falco et al.

Summary: In this study, mapping of coralligenous banks along the continental shelf of Sardinia Island was successfully conducted using multibeam echosounder surveys and video transects. A total area of approximately 436 km2 of sparse patches of coralligenous banks was mapped in the depth range of 40-160 m. The study provides important information on the distribution of coralligenous banks as well as the edge of the continental shelf and rocky seabed.

Understanding the combined effects of multiple stressors: A new perspective on a longstanding challenge

Enrico Pirotta et al.

Summary: This article reviews the research on the effects of multiple stressors on wildlife populations and ecosystems, and proposes a conceptual framework for assessing the combined effects of these stressors. The article points out that different approaches have different assumptions about mechanisms, and that emphasis on mechanisms can improve analytical precision and predictive power but may introduce bias. Using an example, the article demonstrates how this framework can be formalized into specific analytical methods. The article argues that the goal of adaptive management should be to find the most practical and effective ways to remove or reduce the impacts of specific combinations of stressors.

Large-Scale Mercury Dispersion at Sea: Modelling a Multi-Hazard Case Study from Augusta Bay (Central Mediterranean Sea)

Mario Sprovieri et al.

Summary: This article discusses a potential multi-hazard scenario resulting from an earthquake in the highly seismogenic area of the Mediterranean Sea, Augusta Bay. The bay is heavily contaminated with mercury due to long-term industrial exploitation. Utilizing a high-resolution hydrodynamic and transport model, the article calculates the enhanced spreading of mercury in the open sea following the damage to an artificial damming system. The simulated scenario highlights the need for a reevaluation of risk management in marine areas with significant contamination.

The Importance of Dead Seagrass (Posidonia oceanica) Matte as a Biogeochemical Sink

Eugenia T. Apostolaki et al.

Summary: This study assessed the potential of dead seagrass Posidonia oceanica matte as a biogeochemical sink and a coherent archive of environmental change in a degraded area of the Mediterranean Sea. The results showed that the accumulation of elements and the rate of accumulation in the dead matte were higher than in unvegetated sediments and adjacent seagrass meadows.

Measuring anthropogenic impacts on an industrialised coastal marine area using chemical and textural signatures in sediments: A case study of Augusta Harbour (Sicily, Italy)

E. Romano et al.

Summary: Augusta Bay in Sicily, Italy was a major European (petro)chemical hub from the 1950s to the 1970s, but began to decline due to factory closures and production transfer. Significant pollution was found in sediments around the bay, mainly from the former chlor-alkali plant, with contamination affecting the entire harbor to varying degrees. Recent research showed that the construction of a dam/breakwater in the 1960s trapped terrestrial sediment inside the harbor, providing a time marker in sediment cores. Environmental remediation may be necessary to address the presence of highly contaminated sediments in the harbor.

Geomorphological characterization, spatial distribution and environmental status assessment of coralligenous reefs along the Latium continental shelf

M. Pierdomenico et al.

Summary: Coralligenous reefs in the Mediterranean Sea are important ecosystems that are included in the indicators to be assessed under the Marine Strategy Framework Directive. A study in Italy's Latium continental shelf assessed the distribution and environmental status of coralligenous reefs in three different areas, showing a variability in distribution and characteristics, as well as different ecological conditions determined by environmental factors and human pressure. The use of the Mesophotic Assemblages Conservation Status index allowed to evaluate the environmental status of the coralligenous communities and provide informed management decisions for future coastal planning and conservation strategies.

Organochlorines and Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons as fingerprint of exposure pathways from marine sediments to biota

Anna Traina et al.

Summary: The study found that the concentrations of Hg and HCB in the sediments exceeded the EQS of Directive 2000/60/EU. Similarly, n-ary sumation PCB and selected PAHs were above the threshold limit set by regulation. Marine organisms showed Hg concentrations above CE 1881/2006.

The Mediterranean Sea we want

Margherita Cappelletto et al.

Summary: This paper highlights the major gaps and challenges for implementing the UN Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development in the Mediterranean region, providing recommendations to address the situation. The Mediterranean region faces various human-induced pressures, requiring scientific measures to be taken, with an emphasis on transitioning to a sustainable blue economy for the protection of the marine environment and future generations.
