Functionalization of cellulose fibers alongside growth of 2D LDH platelets through urea hydrolysis inspired Taro wettability

Razieh Aladpoosh et al.

Summary: In this study, cotton fabric was functionalized with a hybrid coating of 2D Mg-Al LDH and SA through urea hydrolysis method. The resulting superhydrophobic surface structure, inspired by taro leaf structure, exhibited efficient oil/water separation performance and good stain resistance even after multiple washes. Additionally, the treated cotton showed excellent physico-mechanical properties.

Food packaging during the COVID-19 pandemic: Consumer perceptions

Robert Kitz et al.

Summary: The study found that since the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of Canadian consumers are more concerned about food safety and price consciousness, but their motivation to reduce plastic use has only slightly declined. There has been a significant shift in attitudes towards policy, with less support for tighter regulations or bans on single-use plastics, and an increase in willingness to pay for biodegradable alternatives.

Synergistic effect of hemiacetal crosslinking and crystallinity on wet strength of cellulose nanofiber-reinforced starch films

Raghav Soni et al.

Summary: Complex films prepared by mixing different-storageduration starch pastes with cellulose nanofiber demonstrate improved mechanical properties and wet strength, but long-term storage negatively affects their properties. Optimizing the storage time of starch pastes can improve film properties, providing an environmentally friendly and energy-conserving method.

Enhanced crystallinity and thermal properties of cellulose from rice husk using acid hydrolysis treatment

Halimatun Saadiah Hafid et al.

Summary: Cellulose was extracted from rice husk using an integrated delignification process involving alkaline treatment and acid hydrolysis. HNO3 treatment increased cellulose content and crystallinity, with slightly improved thermal properties. Economic analysis showed chlorine extraction yielded higher cellulose recovery but lower total operation costs compared to HNO3.

Nano-cellulose reinforced starch bio composite films- A review on green composites

Sneh Punia Bangar et al.

Summary: Plastic-based food packaging causes a serious environmental problem, driving the need to develop biodegradable films, with starch as a potential substitute for petroleum-based plastic. While starch has many advantages, its low mechanical strength and water resistance can be overcome by using nanocellulose as a reinforcement in biocomposites for food packaging.
