Predictors and incidence rate of suicide re-attempt among suicide attempters: A prospective study

Elham Davtalab Esmaeili et al.

Summary: Recent studies have improved understanding of suicide trends, risk factors, and protective factors, but predictors of suicide re-attempt remain poorly understood in prospective designs, particularly in Iran. A 5-year prospective study of Suicide Attempters in Malekan County revealed that age <= 25, higher family income, psychiatric disorders, low education, stressful life events, alcohol abuse, and smoking were the most reliable predictors of suicide re-attempt. Healthcare systems should be aware of these predictors to develop appropriate suicide prevention strategies tailored to different at-risk groups.

Suicidality in the geriatric population

Mohammad Ridwan Chattun et al.

Summary: Suicide in older adults is a major global concern, and with the increasing aging population, there is a predicted surge in suicidal deaths. This paper reviews the risk factors, protective factors, assessment rating scales, and current prevention strategies in the geriatric population. It emphasizes the need for personalized interventions based on identifying modifiable risk factors and strengthening protective factors. The study found that factors such as psychiatric illness, physical illnesses, loneliness, and low social support commonly increase suicidal susceptibility in older adults, while good physical health, cognitive function, religiousness, and social connectedness increase resilience. Current preventive strategies have not effectively reduced suicidal risk, highlighting the need for a multilevel prevention program to mitigate risk. Further research and improved preventive measures are necessary to address the issue.
