An assessment of scenarios for future pig production using a One Health approach

S. Zira et al.

Summary: One Health is an approach aimed at achieving better health and well-being outcomes for people, farmed organisms, and their shared environment. This study compared three scenarios for future pig production to analyze their impacts on the environment, people, and organisms, including pigs. The results showed that the scenario with sustainable feed and pigs bred for feed efficiency and improved animal welfare had the least negative effects on the environment, people, and farmed organisms, making it the most preferable scenario.

Addressing indirect sourcing in zero deforestation commodity supply chains

Erasmus K. H. J. Zu Ermgassen et al.

Summary: The trade in agricultural commodities is crucial for the global economy, but it also leads to negative social and environmental impacts, including deforestation. Commodity traders have a significant role to play in eliminating deforestation, but their sourcing strategies are not transparent. A study shows that traders often source more than 40% of commodities indirectly through local intermediaries, which is a blind spot for sustainable sourcing initiatives.

Xiao Sun et al.

Summary: Fungal pre-treatment and fermentation can enhance the nutritional value and digestibility of wet corn distillers' grains and solubles, soybean hull, and their blend, reducing feed cost and increasing revenues. Combining Trichoderma reesei and Aspergillus oryzae shows promise in improving feeding value for monogastric animals, showcasing significant potential for the corn-ethanol and soybean processing industries.

Towards Zero Zinc Oxide: Feeding Strategies to Manage Post-Weaning Diarrhea in Piglets

Andrea Bonetti et al.

Summary: Zinc oxide (ZnO) supplementation at pharmacological doses is widely used in post-weaning piglets to manage post-weaning diarrhea (PWD), which causes significant economic losses in the most crucial phase of a piglet's production cycle. ZnO exerts various positive effects throughout the gastrointestinal tract through multiple mechanisms, targeting intestinal structure, digestion, antioxidants, and immunity. However, concerns over environmental impact and emerging threats are challenging the sustainability of ZnO's extensive utilization.

Feeding Strategies to Reduce Nutrient Losses and Improve the Sustainability of Growing Pigs

Candido Pomar et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the impact of different methods of diet formulation on maximizing nutrient efficiency of utilization, minimizing nutrient excretion, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Modern feeding techniques such as precision feeding and nutrition, as well as reducing crude protein content in diets, can significantly improve nitrogen and energy utilization efficiency. The use of local feedstuff and non-human-edible products with synthetic amino acid inclusion in the diet is valuable in reducing carbon footprint.
