A Review of Sensory and Consumer-related Factors Influencing the Acceptance of Red Meats from Alternative Animal Species

Ibironke O. Popoola et al.

Summary: Alternative red meats such as bison, elk, horse, and kangaroo offer economic opportunities and nutritional benefits, but remain niche markets due to demand and supply limitations. Flavor is the key factor influencing consumption, while undesirable sensory attributes, high prices, seasonal availability, and safety concerns serve as major deterrents to consumption. Consumption is also influenced by socio-demographic factors such as gender, age, income, and education level.

Supplementary feeding yak with oat hay improves nitrogen cycling in an alpine meadow on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, China

Chuntao Yang et al.

Summary: Supplemental feeding with oat hay increased forage biomass by 12.8% and enhanced N return from litter and dung to soil by 8.0% and 6.2%, respectively, compared to non-supplemented systems. However, it did not have a significant effect on soil N stock. Forage biomass and N return from litter to soil increased significantly over time in the supplementation systems. The increased forage biomass led to increased N uptake, balancing out the supplement-induced soil N input and resulting in minimal changes in soil N levels.

Yak Domestication: A Review of Linguistic, Archaeological, and Genetic Evidence

Guillaume Jacques et al.

Summary: Yaks, uniquely adapted to high-altitude environments, play a critical role in the lives of inhabitants in the Tibetan Plateau and neighboring areas. The timing of yak domestication remains debated, but this paper suggests it occurred following hybridization with taurine cattle by the end of the fourth millennium BCE. The study also reveals that the original domesticators of yaks included not only Tibetan ancestors, but also Rgyalrongic speaking people from Eastern Tibet.
