Palm kernel cake in high-concentrate diets improves animal performance without affecting the meat quality of goat kids

T. C. G. C. Rodrigues et al.

Summary: The study aimed to evaluate the effect of high-concentrate diets with palm kernel cake (PKC) on carcass traits and meat quality of feedlot goat kids. Results showed that the diet containing 12% PKC resulted in the highest total weight gain and marbling in the meat.

Nutrient intake, digestibility, feeding behavior, nitrogen balance, and performance of feedlot goat kids fed high-concentrate diets containing licury cake (Syagrus coronata)

Willian Pereira Silva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of adding licury cake on the growth performance and metabolic parameters of goat kids. The results showed that licury cake inclusion decreased nutrient intake and digestibility, increased feeding and rumination time and frequency, and decreased body weight and average daily gain.

Metabolite Profile, Ruminal Methane Reduction, and Microbiome Modulating Potential of Seeds of Pharbitis nil

Rajaraman Bharanidharan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of metabolites from Pharbitis nil seeds on rumen methanogenesis, fiber digestibility, and the rumen microbiome in vitro and in sacco. The results showed that Pharbitis nil could reduce methane production, enhance fiber digestibility, and have antiprotozoal activity in the rumen microbiome.

Phenotypic relationship and repeatability of methane emissions and performance traits in beef cattle using a GreenFeed system

Clodagh Ryan et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the relationship between greenhouse gas traits and production traits in a commercial feedlot unit. The findings suggest that reducing methane emissions may have a negative impact on the growth and body composition of cattle, and methane adjusted for dry matter intake and liveweight should be considered as an alternative emission trait for breeding goals.

Invited review: Current enteric methane mitigation options

Karen A. Beauchemin et al.

Summary: Reducing methane emissions from ruminant livestock is crucial for limiting global temperature increase. Research on methane mitigation has made significant progress in the past two decades, investigating strategies such as production intensification, dietary manipulation, rumen manipulation, and selection of low-emission animals. However, more research is needed for grazing systems to develop effective mitigation strategies.

Feed additives as a strategic approach to reduce enteric methane production in cattle: modes of action, effectiveness and safety

M. Honan et al.

Summary: Increasing concern over GHG contributions from cattle is driving the livestock industry to improve sustainability goals. Enteric methane production is a major contributor to GHG emissions and research on feed additives is showing promise in reducing CH4 emissions. Feed additives work by either inhibiting methanogenesis or modifying the rumen environment, leading to a reduction in CH4 production.

The effects of dietary medium-chain fatty acids on ruminal methanogenesis and fermentation in vitro and in vivo: A meta-analysis

Yulianri Rizki Yanza et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the impact of medium-chain fatty acids (MCFA) on methane production in ruminants, finding that with increasing doses of MCFA, methane production decreased linearly under in vitro conditions and tended to decrease quadratically under in vivo conditions. Different sources of MCFA also showed variations in their effects on methane production in ruminants.

Net protein contribution and enteric methane production of pasture and grain-finished beef cattle supply chains

D. T. Thomas et al.

Summary: The research discussed the grain feeding phase in ruminant red meat production systems around the world and the role of red meat in the food system. The NPC method was applied to evaluate the Australian grass-fed and grain-finished beef supply chains, which make positive contributions to human protein requirements, with the grain-finished system having markedly lower NPC values than the grass-fed system.

Effects of Replacing Cottonseed Meal with Corn Dried Distillers' Grain on Ruminal Parameters, Performance, and Enteric Methane Emissions in Young Nellore Bulls Reared in Tropical Pastures

Tiago Luis Da Ros de Araujo et al.

Summary: Replacing cottonseed meal with DDG at different levels did not significantly affect ruminal parameters, animal performance, and enteric CH4 emissions of grazing Nellore cattle during the rearing phase in the wet season. However, supplementation with 0.3% body weight of concentrate can improve the productive performance of grazing animals. Both protein sources, DDG or cottonseed meal, can be utilized to intensify beef cattle production.

Shade Modifies Behavioral and Physiological Responses of Low to Medium Production Dairy Cows at Pasture in an Integrated Crop-Livestock-Forest System

Natani S. Reis et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the behavioral and physiological responses of Gyr and Girolando dairy cows in shaded and full sun environments in tropical regions. The results indicated that shaded pasture can enhance animal welfare, reduce animal surface temperature, and increase rumination time for dairy zebu cows. Behaviorally, dairy cows adjust their activities in high temperature, humidity, and solar radiation conditions to decrease metabolic heat production while grazing.

Summary: A meta-analysis was conducted on 108 papers to evaluate the efficacy of different dietary interventions in reducing enteric methane emissions from ruminants. Macroalgae and 3-nitrooxypropanol were found to be the most effective interventions in reducing CH4 yield. Implementing these strategies could have substantial potential in reducing national livestock emissions.
