Assessment of BPV-1 Mediated Matrix Metalloproteinase Genes Deregulation in the In Vivo and In Vitro Models Designed to Explore Molecular Nature of Equine Sarcoids

Przemyslaw Podstawski et al.

Summary: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are enzymes that can break down structural proteins responsible for extracellular matrix (ECM) integrity. Imbalanced MMP activity can lead to pathological changes. This study found that the transcriptional activity of MMP genes is related to cell transformation in equine dermal tissue and tumor cells.

Multifunctional intracellular matrix metalloproteinases: implications in disease

Wesam Bassiouni et al.

Summary: Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a family of zinc-dependent endopeptidases that were initially discovered as proteases targeting extracellular proteins. However, recent research has revealed their crucial intracellular roles in various pathological conditions, including cardiovascular renal disorders, inflammation, and malignancy. In addition to MMP-2, at least eleven other MMPs have been identified to function intracellularly, highlighting the importance of understanding their roles in cellular processes and potential as therapeutic targets.
