Adaptive Evolution as a Driving Force of the Emergence and Re-Emergence of Mosquito-Borne Viral Diseases

Xi Yu et al.

Summary: Mosquito-borne viral diseases are a significant burden on global public health due to their ability to adapt and mutate, leading to widespread epidemics.

Summary: This study describes the natural infection rate of dengue, chikungunya, and Zika viruses in male Aedes aegypti mosquitoes from Merida, Mexico. It found evidence of vertical transmission of these viruses within mosquito populations in an endemic area.

Zika virus-induced brain malformations in chicken embryos

Gabriela Elis Wachholz et al.

Summary: The study used chicken embryos as an experimental model to evaluate the morphological changes induced by ZIKV, showing that infected embryos had higher mortality rates and defects such as brain malformation. The phenotypes were most evident 4 days postinfection, when the viral load quantification reached a peak.

Natural arbovirus infection rate and detectability of indoor female Aedes aegypti from Merida, Yucatan, Mexico

Oscar David Kirstein et al.

Summary: This study found that accurately estimating and quantifying arbovirus infection rate and transmission risk depends on sampling efforts, local Aedes aegypti abundance, and arbovirus circulation intensity. Sampling 200 houses with suspected ABV active transmission revealed high virus infection rates in all Aedes aegypti present, providing evidence of the importance of virus testing in vector populations for epidemiological trials.

Measuring the global burden of chikungunya and Zika viruses: A systematic review

Christopher J. Puntasecca et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the global burden caused by CHIKV and ZIKV between 2010 and 2019, estimating an average annual DALY loss of over 106,000 and 44,000 for each virus respectively. The Americas experienced significantly higher burden compared to other WHO regions, possibly due to limited reporting in other regions and the lack of immunity in the previously unexposed populations of the Americas.

Infection, dissemination, and transmission efficiencies of Zika virus in Aedes aegypti after serial passage in mosquito or mammalian cell lines or alternating passage in both cell types

Lourdes G. Talavera-Aguilar et al.

Summary: This study compared the genetic changes and fitness of Zika virus (ZIKV) after serial passaging in mosquito or vertebrate cell lines. The results showed that mosquito cell-adapted ZIKV exhibited greater in vivo fitness in Aedes aegypti, suggesting a fitness cost associated with obligatory cycling between disparate hosts. These findings enhance understanding of ZIKV adaptation and evolution, emphasizing the importance of considering in vivo passage histories in vector competence studies.

Evidence of Zika Virus Infection in Pigs and Mosquitoes , Mexico

Daniel Nunez-Avellaneda et al.

Summary: Research indicates that pigs can seroconvert after exposure to Zika virus and may serve as sentinels. Additionally, pigs have been shown to be susceptible to natural Zika virus infection, as antibodies were found in domestic pigs in Yucatan, Mexico. Furthermore, Zika virus RNA was detected in mosquitoes from five different species collected inside pigpens.
