Recommendations to improve use and reporting of statistics in animal experiments

Anthony Rowe

Summary: Flaws in experimental statistics significantly contribute to the reproducibility issue in animal experiments. Clear reporting of experimental data and the statistical methods used are vital for making informed conclusions. Misinterpretation, manipulation, or concealment of data generates false results, leading to irreproducible science and hindering scientific progress.

A Validated Smartphone-based Electrocardiogram Reveals Severe Bradyarrhythmias during Immobilizing Restraint in Mice of Both Sexes and Four Strains

Rachael N. Labitt et al.

Summary: The study found that immobilizing restraint in mice can lead to severe bradycardia and irregular heart rhythm, while lighter restraint methods have a less significant impact on the cardiovascular system. It is recommended to use gentle or three-finger restraint when handling mice, and to avoid or minimize the use of immobilization restraint.

Mouse background genetics in biomedical research: The devil's in the details

Ariel M. Hay et al.

Summary: The study found that mutations in the N-terminus of Band3 lead to increased lipid oxidation and decreased 24-hour recovery during RBC storage. Genetic analysis revealed that some phenotypic changes were caused by the inheritance of a region on chromosome 1 of 129 origin, rather than the modification of Band3.
