The relationship between chikungunya virus and the kidneys: A scoping review

Denise Maria do Nascimento Costa et al.

Summary: Atypical forms of CHIK, such as neurological, cardiac, and renal involvement, have been described with high morbidity and mortality rates. Data on kidney injury related to CHIK is scarce, with only acute phase studies conducted, lacking further characterization.

Chikungunya virus as a trigger for different renal disorders: an exploratory study

Denise Maria do Nascimento Costa et al.

Summary: Histopathological changes were found in renal tissue after chikungunya fever, but viral antigens were not detected. This suggests that chikungunya virus may cause kidney injury at different stages of infection, but replication of the virus in renal tissue is unlikely.

Clinical Characteristics, Histopathology, and Tissue Immunolocalization of Chikungunya Virus Antigen in Fatal Cases

Tyler M. Sharp et al.

Summary: This study described the clinical, histologic, and immunohistochemical findings in individuals who died following CHIKV infection. Most fatal cases had comorbidities and CHIKV antigen was detected in mesenchymal tissues and mononuclear cells. CHIKV infection may rarely cause fatal septic shock and other severe manifestations.

A phase 1 trial of lipid-encapsulated mRNA encoding a monoclonal antibody with neutralizing activity against Chikungunya virus

Summary: The study evaluated the safety and pharmacology of mRNA-1944 as a treatment for Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) infection, showing good safety and tolerability in healthy participants. Additionally, mRNA-1944 demonstrated the ability to produce effective neutralizing antibodies, suggesting potential for treating CHIKV infection.

Thrombotic microangiopathy associated with arboviral infection: Report of 3 cases

Jose Luiz Coelho Junior et al.

Summary: Dengue fever and chikungunya virus disease can lead to a rare complication known as thrombotic microangiopathy (TMA). Three TMA patients with arboviral infections were diagnosed through gene testing and kidney biopsy, with two successfully recovering after treatment with eculizumab while the third patient's abandonment of treatment resulted in kidney failure.

Co-Immunization With CHIKV VLP and DNA Vaccines Induces a Promising Humoral Response in Mice

Zhimin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study found that co-immunization with DNA and VLP induced the highest levels of antigen-specific IgG and neutralizing activity, while DNA vaccination alone induced the strongest cellular immunity. All vaccine groups were able to protect mice from lethal CHIKV challenge, but mice co-immunized with DNA and VLP exhibited the best protective effects, with the mildest histopathological changes and lowest scores.

The Clinicopathological Spectrum of Kidney Lesions in Chikungunya Fever: A Report of 5 Cases With Kidney Biopsy

Anne-Claire Aurore et al.

Summary: Chikungunya nephropathy is a rare cause of acute kidney injury associated with the mosquito-borne chikungunya arbovirus. Kidney biopsies in confirmed CHIKV infection cases during an outbreak in the French West Indies showed acute interstitial nephritis and acute tubular injury as the main histopathologic patterns. Despite the severity of the condition, all patients had a favorable short-term outcome with recovery of kidney function.

Antivirals against the Chikungunya Virus

Verena Battisti et al.

Summary: Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted alphavirus that causes chikungunya fever (CHIKF) characterized by severe joint pain and myalgia. With no effective antiviral drugs or vaccines currently available, the development of a drug to inhibit CHIKV is crucial for CHIKF treatment. Various approaches for identifying potential compounds and promising viral and host targets are discussed in current antiviral research and development.
