Psychobiological Mechanisms in Somatic Symptom Disorder and Depressive Disorders: An Ecological Momentary Assessment Approach

Ricarda Mewes et al.

Summary: Negative psychological factors (NPFs) play a crucial role in the development of somatic symptom disorder (SSD) and depressive disorders (DDs), maintaining symptoms through dysregulation of biological stress systems. A higher number of NPFs is associated with greater intensity and impairment of somatic symptoms. In women with DD, NPFs are associated with higher cortisol levels, while in women with SSD, NPFs are associated with lower cortisol levels. Lower cortisol levels in SSD are associated with higher symptom intensity at the next measurement time point.
