Direct, Indirect, and Buffering Effect of Social Support on Parental Involvement Among Chinese Parents of Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders

Summary: Parental involvement is crucial for children with ASD, and social support can enhance parental involvement by reducing parenting stress. This study found that support from family and friends is related to parental involvement, and support from significant others can directly increase parental involvement. Support from family and friends also moderates the impact of parenting stress on parental involvement. The study concludes with a discussion on the direct, indirect, and buffering effects of social support on parental involvement.

Prenatal stress, health, and health behaviours during the COVID-19 pandemic: An international survey

Summary: This study examined the levels of stress, mental and physical health, and health behaviors among pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic. The findings showed that pregnant women experienced high levels of pregnancy-specific and COVID-19-related stress, and had lower levels of mental and physical health. However, they generally adhered to public health advice and pregnancy health behaviors. Well-being factors had the strongest predictive effect on stress and general mental health outcomes, while health impairing behaviors were influenced by both well-being and demographic factors.

Summary: According to reports, the global number of confirmed COVID-19 cases has exceeded 400 million. England is experiencing another outbreak of COVID-19 due to the emergence of the Omicron variant. The country has implemented control measures and achieved high vaccination rates. The English government plans to lift the last legal restrictions by February 24. However, modeling and simulation suggest that continued prevention measures are necessary to avoid a second wave of the epidemic due to the increased transmissibility and vaccine resistance of the new variant.

Parenting Styles, Parental Stress, and Quality of Life Among Caregivers of Thai Children with Autism

Summary: Parenting children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) presents challenges and can lead to high levels of stress and poor mental health for parents. This study compared parenting styles, parental stress, and caregivers' quality of life between children with ASD and those without ASD. The results showed that caregivers of children with ASD had lower authoritative scores and higher permissive parenting style scores. They also reported significantly greater parental stress and poorer parental quality of life. Higher parental stress was moderately correlated with lower authoritative, higher authoritarian, and higher permissive parenting styles. There was a negative correlation between the quality of life of children with ASD and authoritarian and permissive parenting styles. Promoting appropriate parenting styles and helping caregivers manage their parenting stress may be beneficial for caregivers of children with autism.

Mental health of pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic: A longitudinal study

Summary: During the quarantine period of 50 days, all women showed a gradual increase in psychopathological indicators and a decrease in positive affect, with pregnant women exhibiting a more pronounced increase in depression, anxiety, and negative affect than non-pregnant women did. Additionally, pregnant women experienced a more pronounced decrease in positive affect compared to non-pregnant women.
