Associations between the streetscape built environment and walking to school among primary schoolchildren in Beijing, China

Summary: This study uses travel data and street view imagery from Beijing to explore the non-linear associations between built environment attributes and the likelihood of walking to school for children. The study finds that children from higher-income families are more likely to walk to school in neighborhoods with lower walkability, while higher street enclosure is associated with higher odds of walking for all respondents. Additionally, there is a non-linear negative relationship between the odds of walking and street safety facilities. The ownership of household cars, educational attainment of parents, and household annual income also modify the association between the built environment and walking to school.

Further research is needed to shift perceptions towards cycling efforts, especially among girls, and to encourage female parents/guardians to better support their daughters in cycling to school.
