Breeding dispersal movements of Dupont's Lark Chersophilus duponti in fragmented landscape

Cristian Perez-Granados et al.

Summary: Understanding the dispersal behaviour of threatened species is important for conservation, and the study on Dupont's Lark in Spain showed a low breeding dispersal rate. Movements between habitat patches were detected, different from previous studies in the Ebro Valley, and the low recovery rate of young birds suggests they may have left the study area. Further research on post-fledging survival rate and natal dispersal movements is needed for effective conservation measures.

Extensive sheep grazing is associated with trends in steppe birds in Spain: recommendations for the Common Agricultural Policy

Juan Traba et al.

Summary: This study used sheep and bird data from Spain and found a positive correlation between the decline in sheep numbers and the decline in farmland and shrub-steppe birds. The results suggest that extensive grazing should be promoted to protect steppe birds in future agricultural policies and conservation programs.

Identifying the possibilities and pitfalls of conducting IUCN Red List assessments from remotely sensed habitat information based on insights from poorly known Cuban mammals

Clare Duncan et al.

Summary: The International Union for Conservation of Nature's Red List of Threatened Species (RLS) is a key global tool for assessing species extinction risk status objectively. Satellite remote sensing (SRS) data sets show potential for informing range-based RLS assessment, but their incorporation is restricted by limitations in data sets and assumptions related to habitat distributions for taxa with varying habitats. The study found that a one-size-fits-all approach to incorporating SRS information in RLS assessment is inappropriate, and suggested revisions to improve integration of existing time series data into the RLS assessment process.

Past, present, future: tracking and simulating genetic differentiation over time in a closed metapopulation system

Florian Kunz et al.

Summary: Genetic differentiation is crucial in assessing metapopulation systems, with higher genetic differentiation increasing extinction risk. By comparing historical and recent microsatellite data, we found an increase in genetic differentiation over 15 years in a forest grouse metapopulation. Forward simulations predicted further genetic differentiation by 2050 with current migration rates, highlighting the importance of maintaining connectivity between subpopulations to prevent further genetic differentiation.

Summary: The study highlights the potential extinction of the Dupont's Lark metapopulation in 2-3 decades, supporting its reclassification to Endangered in Spain. Habitat restoration and individual translocation in key subpopulations can improve viability and postpone overall extinction risk.

A recovery network leads to the natural recolonization of an archipelago and a potential trailing edge refuge

Matthew M. Smith et al.

Summary: Rapid environmental changes are causing species loss and declining carnivore populations globally. Identifying refuges within translocation frameworks is crucial for population recovery and persistence. American martens have been successfully reintroduced to Apostle Islands, which now act as a source for regional recovery networks.

Connectivity in Spanish metapopulation of Dupont's lark may be maintained by dispersal over medium-distance range and stepping stones

Alexander Garcia-Anton et al.

Summary: The Dupont's Lark metapopulation in Spain consists of 24 populations, 100 subpopulations, and 294 potential stepping stones. Connectivity of the network is influenced by movement thresholds and the presence of stepping stones. Key nodes are located in the core of the metapopulation, facilitating connectivity among subpopulations, while peripheral populations require stepping stones or longer potential movement thresholds to join the network. The conservation of traditional grazing lands and identification of critical stepping stones are essential for the long-term preservation of Dupont's Lark in Spain.
