Ripe for reassessment: A synthesis of available molecular data for the speciose diatom family Bacillariaceae

David G. Mann et al.

Summary: This study analyzed multiple gene sequences to examine the Bacillariaceae family, confirming that Nitzschia is not monophyletic. While the classification of Nitzschia has its shortcomings, certain features like the structure of the raphe canal and girdle appear to be evolutionarily conservative.

New cyanobacterium Aliterella vladivostokensis sp. nov. (Aliterellaceae, Chroococcidiopsidales), isolated from temperate monsoon climate zone (Vladivostok, Russia)

Shamil R. Abdullin et al.

Summary: A new coccoid cyanobacterium, Aliterella vladivostokensis, was described from an urban aerophytic habitat in Vladivostok, Russia, using a polyphasic approach. Despite high morphological similarity with A. antarctica, differences in 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer sequences and unique mutations allowed the establishment of a new species.

Broadening the Taxonomic Composition of Diatoms (Bacillariophyta) in the Flora of the Lena River (Streams of the Western Slope of the Kharaulakh Range, Yakutia)

S. I. Genkal et al.

Summary: This electron microscopy study identified 59 taxa of diatom algae from 32 genera in streams on the western slope of the Kharaulakh Range, expanding the diversity of Bacillariophyta at both the species and genus levels. A total of 35 new diatom species for the Lena River mouth and 17 new species for the flora of Yakutia were discovered. Most of the new species found in Yakutia are rare freshwater algae that prefer oligotrophic waters.
