Odonata Assemblages in Anthropogenically Impacted Habitats in the Drava River-A Long-Term Study

Marina Vilenica et al.

Summary: Lotic freshwater ecosystems are highly threatened by multiple stressors, and Odonata can serve as indicators of ecological integrity and anthropogenic disturbance. This study found negative impacts of human activities on Odonata assemblages, with low species richness and population densities. The concentration of certain physico-chemical water parameters was identified as important determinants of Odonata assemblages. The preservation of near-natural habitats is crucial for the conservation of Odonata fauna and rare species.

Longitudinal dynamics of Odonata assemblages in an anthropogenically impacted lotic system

Iva Vidakovic Maodus et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution and ecological traits of Odonata in a lotic system in Croatia, which is affected by degraded water quality and hydromorphological stressors. The results showed that the abundance of Odonata was higher in woody debris samples, and only a few water quality parameters had a significant impact on the Odonata assemblages. The study also found that the modification of the river channel led to a decrease in Odonata abundance.

Invertebrate functional responses to hydromorphological degradation in Mediterranean Croatian rivers

Marina Sumanovic et al.

Summary: Hydromorphological alterations, such as channelization and damming, have a significant impact on aquatic macroinvertebrates, affecting their feeding behavior and habitat preference. Shredders are the most affected group by hydrological alteration, while taxa confined to specific habitats are also negatively affected. Smaller and faster-reproducing taxa show more resilience to hydromorphological degradation. The functional approach to bioassessment complements traditional approaches and provides valuable ecological insights.

Scale-depended effects of hydromorphology and riparian land-use on benthic invertebrates and fish: implications for large river management

Miha Knehtl et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of riparian land-cover and hydromorphology on benthic invertebrate and fish assemblages in large rivers. Results showed that hydromorphology had a greater impact on BI and fish, especially at the largest 5,000 m scale. While riparian land-cover explained less biotic variability, riparian length still had significant effects on BI and fish.

A new water mite species of the Hygrobates fluviatilis-complex from Russia (Acari, Hydrachnidia, Hygrobatidae)

Petr V. Tuzovskij

Summary: The study describes a new species of the Hygrobates fluviatilis-complex from Russia, based on material collected by the author in running waters of the European part of the country. The specimens were sampled with a hand net and fresh material was used to make slides for examination.

Back to Ecology: Reference Conditions as a Basis for Assessment, Restoration and Sustainable Management of Large Rivers

Gorazd Urbanic et al.

Summary: The study found that in large rivers in Southeast Europe, there are still stretches with at least near-natural conditions, where benthic invertebrate assemblages contain several rare or remarkable species. Habitat heterogeneity and substrate independently influence benthic invertebrate assemblages.
