Critical review and gap analysis on the use of high-volume fly ash as a substitute constituent in concrete

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the application of high-volume fly ash concrete (HVFAC) in the construction industry and summarizes and analyzes its microstructural, fresh, mechanical, and durability properties. Compared to conventional concrete, HVFAC has slightly lower mechanical properties at the early age but shows significant advantages in terms of later age mechanical properties, workability, resistance against drying shrinkage, sulfate attack, and chloride penetration. The paper also summarizes the mechanisms of additives for improving the early-age strength of HVFAC and evaluates the economic and environmental benefits of HVFAC.

Experimental investigation on the properties of the interface between RCC layers subjected to early-age frost damage

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This research investigates the performance of early-age frost roller compacted concrete (RCC) interface, focusing on the influence of pre-curing time and interval time on its performance under early-age frost damage. The study evaluates shear failure modes, shear strength, pore structure, interfacial transition zone crack width (Wc), and hydration products of the RCC interface. Results demonstrate that shear strength increases with longer pre-curing time and decreases with longer interval time. Hydrostatic pressure increase is the primary cause of damage in the early-age frost RCC interface.

Investigating the fresh state performance of concrete containing iron slag and recycled concrete aggregates

Navdeep Singh et al.

Summary: Iron slag is a major industrial waste from the iron and steel manufacturing industry, and its disposal poses significant ecological threats. By utilizing industrial by-products like iron slag and recycled concrete aggregates, the workability, compressive strength, and permeability characteristics of concrete can be improved. The experimental study shows that the inclusion of iron slag and recycled concrete aggregates enhances the performance of concrete, encouraging their use in concrete manufacturing.

Summary: The study reported on the performance of Self-Compacting Concrete pavement mixes containing Recycled Concrete Aggregates, showing that the addition of RCAs did not have a negative effect on the behavior of the mixes. It is recommended to use normal-grade SCC with a high proportion of fly ash and 100% RCAs to maximize the use of recycled materials.

Effect of particle-size gradation on cyclic shear properties of recycled concrete aggregate

Yunteng Huang et al.

Summary: The particle-size gradation significantly affects the cyclic shear behavior of recycled concrete aggregate (RCA). Well-graded RCA exhibits higher shear strength, vertical displacement, stiffness, and damping compared to poorly-graded and discontinuously-graded RCA. Further, post-cyclic shear tests show enhanced shear strength in RCA, with well-graded RCA demonstrating superior friction characteristics.
