Chronic post-COVID-19 syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome: Is there a role for extracorporeal apheresis?

Stefan R. Bornstein et al.

Summary: Research has found that patients with long COVID syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome have similar elevation of autoantibodies. Extracorporeal apheresis can effectively reduce these antibodies levels and improve symptoms, providing a promising therapeutic option for patients with post-COVID-19 syndrome. This method may also be effective in cases involving other unknown antibodies and inflammatory mediators.

The Conundrum of 'Long-COVID-19': A Narrative Review

Mandeep Garg et al.

Summary: Long-COVID-19 refers to the lingering symptoms experienced by post-recovery COVID-19 patients, including fatigue, dyspnea, cough, and headache. It is important to raise awareness among medical professionals, patients, the public, and policymakers to prepare healthcare facilities for continued surveillance of these patients. Further research and establishment of post-COVID care clinics are necessary to evaluate and manage the long-term consequences of COVID-19.

Effects of Post-Exertional Malaise on Markers of Arterial Stiffness in Individuals with Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Joshua Bond et al.

Summary: The study found that individuals with ME/CFS did not experience exercise-induced vasodilation during recovery, unlike the control group. This suggests that those with ME/CFS may have chronic vascular damage, which could contribute to the onset of post-exertional malaise.

Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome: Essentials of Diagnosis and Management

Lucinda Bateman et al.

Summary: Despite a lack of appropriate clinical guidance for ME/CFS, recent developments including new diagnostic criteria and the withdrawal of graded exercise and cognitive-behavioral therapy as treatment options show promise for improving the diagnosis and management of the condition. The increase in patients experiencing symptoms similar to ME/CFS after acute COVID-19 has brought more attention to the need for better understanding and treatment of ME/CFS.

A Paradigm for Post-Covid-19 Fatigue Syndrome Analogous to ME/CFS

Angus Mackay

Summary: Some COVID-19 patients are experiencing prolonged Post-COVID-19 Fatigue Syndrome, similar to Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS), but the underlying pathophysiological explanation is still unclear. It is suggested that the hypothalamic paraventricular nucleus (PVN) may play a central role in the development of this syndrome, with SARS-CoV-2 acting as a severe stressor that could lead to ongoing dysfunction in genetically susceptible individuals. Further research is needed to explore the relationship between COVID-19 and ME/CFS, and brain-scanning studies may help to better understand the pathophysiology of Post-COVID-19 Fatigue Syndrome.

Digital Laser Doppler Flowmetry: Device, Signal Processing Technique, and Clinical Testing

I. O. Kozlov et al.

Summary: A method and device for digital laser Doppler flowmetry were proposed, with signal processing based on analysis of power spectrum amplitude distribution over Doppler broadening frequencies. The research led to the development of binary classifiers for classifying volunteers and patients based on microcirculation functional state.

Luis Nacul et al.

Summary: EUROMENE, funded by COST from 2016 to 2020, aims to assess healthcare delivery for individuals with ME/CFS in European countries. The network consists of clinicians, researchers, and health professionals from 22 countries working to improve care for people with ME/CFS.

Perceptions of European ME/CFS Experts Concerning Knowledge and Understanding of ME/CFS among Primary Care Physicians in Europe: A Report from the European ME/CFS Research Network (EUROMENE)

John Cullinan et al.

Summary: The survey results reflect experts' concerns about the lack of knowledge and confidence among general practitioners in diagnosing and managing ME/CFS, leading to missed and delayed diagnoses. The need for more training on ME/CFS is emphasized to address these issues and improve patient care. The findings are consistent with existing scientific literature, highlighting the importance of increased awareness and education in the medical community.
