Entomological Characteristics of Malaria Transmission across Benin: An Essential Element for Improved Deployment of Vector Control Interventions

Tatcheme Filemon Tokponnon et al.

Summary: Through a study on vector dynamics and transmission, it was found that there are low, medium, and high levels of malaria transmission in different areas of Benin. The study also revealed the heterogeneity of malaria transmission in the country. The findings will be used to improve vector control strategies and protect the most at-risk populations.

The spectrum of clinical biomarkers in severe malaria and new avenues for exploration

Loick Pradel Kojom Foko et al.

Summary: This review emphasizes the importance of identifying and validating biomarkers for severe malaria, highlighting the limitations and challenges faced in this process. It also discusses the need for research on neglected malaria species and the practicality of measurement methods in future studies. Additionally, the review emphasizes the importance of omics technologies in the faster identification and validation of severe malaria biomarkers.

Cerebrospinal Fluid Pterins, Pterin-Dependent Neurotransmitters, and Mortality in Pediatric Cerebral Malaria

Matthew P. Rubach et al.

Summary: This study found that despite low systemic BH4 levels in children with cerebral malaria (CM), the levels of BH4 in their cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) were elevated and associated with increased odds of survival. The levels of BH4-dependent neurotransmitter metabolites in CM children were overall normal. Elevated CSF neopterin levels were 100% sensitive for diagnosing CM.

Elevated Neopterin Levels Predict Fatal Outcome in SARS-CoV-2-Infected Patients

Manon Chauvin et al.

Summary: This study found that severe and critically ill patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection exhibit exacerbated immune activation characterized by elevated neopterin blood levels. Systemic neopterin levels can serve as a biomarker of severe Covid-19, helping to identify high-risk populations.
