Application of Electrospun Nonwoven Fibers in Air Filters

Nanofiber nonwoven mats, characterized by low-pressure drop, high surface area to volume ratio, and submicron particle filtration, offer the ability to customize fiber materials. This review examines various methods for manufacturing nonwoven mats for air filtration, with a focus on electrospinning, and explores the effects of morphology, structure, and material parameters on the filtration process. Additionally, metallic, ceramic, and organic nanoparticle coatings and their impact on air filtration are discussed.

Solution blown nanofibrous air filters modified with glass microparticles

Summary: This study aimed to improve the performance of nanofibrous air filters by adding glass particles, which resulted in lower pressure drop, higher air permeability, and better filtration performance. The PA6 + 5%GP sample demonstrated the highest quality factor value of 0.43 and a filtration efficiency of 99.97% at an expense of only 187.3 Pa pressure drop, due to the lower solidity of composite webs.

Summary: The PA6 nanofibrous mats showed 85% PM0.3 capture at a cost of 164 Pa when set to a specific fabric winding speed, but a higher winding speed decreased filtration efficiency. Applying an electrical field led to FFP3-level filtration with 99% PM0.3 capture, attributed to fine fiber diameter, higher solidity value, and lower average pore size. Electrically assisted solution blowing is a feasible method for high-quality nanofibrous filter media production.
