The positive correlation of antioxidant activity and prebiotic effect about oat phenolic compounds

Yunzhen Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the correlation between the antioxidant activity and prebiotic effect of oat phenolic compounds. The results showed that phenolic compounds with higher antioxidant capacity can promote the proliferation of beneficial gut microbiota and inhibit the growth of harmful bacteria. This study provides a basis for understanding the relationship between antioxidant stress and gut microbiota regulation.

Evaluation of the Potential Anti-Inflammatory Activity of Black Rice in the Framework of Celiac Disease

Stefano Piazza et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a cellular model using gliadin as a pro-inflammatory stimulus and evaluate the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of extracts from different black rice in the context of celiac disease (CD). The black rice extracts showed inhibitory effects on oxidative and inflammatory mediators, particularly the lymphocyte-attracting CXCL-10. The presence of anthocyanins and their digestion metabolites may account for the observed anti-inflammatory activity after in vitro digestion. These preliminary findings support the potential use of black rice as a healthy food or ingredient for celiacs.

Coeliac disease

Carlo Catassi et al.

Summary: Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder primarily affecting the small intestine and caused by the ingestion of gluten. It has a complex immune response mechanism. The disease has diverse clinical symptoms, including gastrointestinal symptoms, extraintestinal manifestations, and subclinical cases. Diagnosis involves serological testing and small-intestinal biopsy, and treatment includes a gluten-free diet.

Differential Flavonoids and Carotenoids Profiles in Grains of Six Poaceae Crops

Jiaoyan Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the metabolomic variations among six important species of Poaceae crops and identified the differences in flavonoid and carotenoid metabolites. Crop-specific metabolites were identified, and the major differences were found in flavone, anthocyanins, flavanone, and polyphenol. The study provides a better understanding of the functional metabolites in Poaceae crops.

Recent advances on dietary polyphenol's potential roles in Celiac Disease

Ricardo Dias et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown the potential health benefits of polyphenols in preventing age-related chronic diseases, but more research is needed to understand their role in treating Celiac Disease. Polyphenols have been found to interact with immunogenic peptides, counteract oxidative stress and inflammation, regulate intestinal barrier integrity, affect the gut microbiome, and modulate immune responses, suggesting their potential as nutritional strategy in managing and preventing Celiac Disease.

The Gluten-Free Diet for Celiac Disease and Beyond

Bara Aljada et al.

Summary: The gluten-free diet is popular for treating immune-mediated disorders caused by gluten, but it has disadvantages like high costs, nutritional deficiencies, and social and psychological barriers. Close follow-up with patients following the diet is recommended, and more data is needed to assess its effectiveness in managing mental and cognitive disorders.

Pigmented Corn Varieties as Functional Ingredients for Gluten-Free Products

Francesca Colombo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the potential of pigmented corn as a new source of gluten-free ingredients with high antioxidant activity, which could help reduce oxidative stress at the intestinal level in celiac subjects. The findings suggest that pigmented corn varieties have a significantly higher content of polyphenols compared to common yellow varieties, and could play a role in mitigating inflammatory responses in some celiac patients.
