Plant flavonoids: Classification, distribution, biosynthesis, and antioxidant activity

Nan Shen et al.

Summary: Flavonoids are natural polyphenol substances abundant in various plant-based foods. They have significant biological activities in both plants and humans, such as antioxidant, antimicrobial, and anti-inflammatory effects. However, research on their distribution, biosynthesis, and health benefits remains limited. Future opportunities in flavonoid research include biotechnology, therapeutic phytoproducts, and exploring dietary flavonoid bioavailability.

Integrated Metabolomic and Transcriptomic Analysis Reveals Differential Mechanism of Flavonoid Biosynthesis in Two Cultivars of Angelica sinensis

Tiantian Zhu et al.

Summary: In this study, metabolomic and transcriptomic analyses were conducted to compare the differences of flavonoids and transcripts in two cultivars of Angelica sinensis. The results showed higher levels of flavonoids and anthocyanins in the cultivar with purple stem (M1) compared to the cultivar with green stem (M2). Several candidate genes involved in flavonoid biosynthesis were identified. These findings provide references for flavonoid production and cultivar selection of A. sinensis.

Stress-Responsive cis-Regulatory Elements Underline Podophyllotoxin Biosynthesis and Better Performance of Sinopodophyllum hexandrum Under Water Deficit Conditions

Anita Kumari et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the promoter sequences of key genes in Sinopodophyllum hexandrum to understand the transcriptional regulation under environmental stress and its impact on podophyllotoxin (PTOX) accumulation. The results revealed the importance of osmoprotectants during water deficit and the species' ability to recover from it. The study also provided insights into the regulation of PTOX biosynthesis.

Integrated network analyses identify MYB4R1 neofunctionalization in the UV-B adaptation of Tartary buckwheat

Moyang Liu et al.

Summary: This study developed a workflow to obtain a co-functional network of UV-B response using data from thousands of samples and multiple species. The results revealed the importance of flavonoid biosynthesis in UV-B response and identified the regulatory factor MYB4R1 as a key player. In vitro and in vivo experiments confirmed the role of MYB4R1 in regulating flavonoid and anthocyanin accumulation in buckwheat under UV-B radiation. Additionally, a visual discrimination model of buckwheat flavonoid content was developed using deep learning.

Spatio-temporal control of phenylpropanoid biosynthesis by inducible complementation of a cinnamate 4-hydroxylase mutant

Jeong Im Kim et al.

Summary: The expression of C4H enzyme in Arabidopsis plants can affect the synthesis and turnover of phenylpropanoids in the phenylpropanoid pathway, thus impacting plant development and lignin production. The restoration of fertility and substantial lignin production in plants with well-developed primary inflorescence stems upon C4H expression indicates the plasticity of the developmental window for lignification. Additionally, a defective Casparian strip diffusion barrier was identified in the root endodermis of the ref3-2 mutant, which was restored by induction of C4H expression.

Genome-wide identification of heat shock factors and heat shock proteins in response to UV and high intensity light stress in lettuce

Taehoon Kim et al.

Summary: Our genome-wide analysis identified 32 Hsfs and 22 small heat shock proteins (LsHsps) in lettuce, some of which do not have orthologs in Arabidopsis, poplar, and rice. Surprisingly, LsHsp70s have three times more members than Arabidopsis and two times more than rice, mostly due to genome tandem duplication. The transcriptional analysis revealed that genes from certain families were highly responsive to UV and high intensity light stress, providing candidate genes for breeding lettuce varieties resilient to artificial light in hydroponic systems.

Membrane localized thaumatin-like protein from tea (CsTLP) enhanced seed yield and the plant survival under drought stress in Arabidopsis thaliana

Richard Chalo Muoki et al.

Summary: The study found that transgenic lines expressing CsTLP showed better performance in electrolyte leakage and water retention capacity under drought stress, with CsTLP fusion protein localized on the cell membrane. The expression of CsTLP can enhance drought tolerance in Arabidopsis, increasing seed yield and plant survival rate.
