Exploitation of Marginal Hilly Land in Tuscany through the Cultivation of Lavandula angustifolia Mill.: Characterization of Its Essential Oil and Antibacterial Activity

Basma Najar et al.

Summary: Lavandula angustifolia, a highly adaptable plant, undergoes changes in its essential oil composition and antimicrobial activity in response to variations in climate and soil conditions. The volatile profile of the essential oil is dominated by linalool and linalool acetate, with a shift in their proportions over the plant's growth cycle. Sesquiterpene compounds are abundant in the first year but decrease with plant growth, while monoterpenes constitute the majority of identified constituents in third and fourth-year plants. The essential oil extracted from the oldest plants demonstrates higher antimicrobial activity against Gram-positive strains. The Tuscan lavender essential oil, particularly from four-year-old plants, holds potential for industrial applications and showcases the valorization of marginal land in Tuscany.

Variation in the Antimicrobial Activity of Essential Oils from Cultivars of Lavandula angustifolia and L. x intermedia

Magdalena Walasek-Janusz et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the antimicrobial activity of essential oils from lavender cultivars in central-eastern Poland and found that they were effective against all microorganisms tested. Yeasts were more sensitive to lavender oil than bacteria, with Gram-positive bacteria being more sensitive than Gram-negative bacteria. Among the cultivars tested, 'Grosso' showed the lowest MIC values for bacteria and fungi, as well as the highest fungicidal activity. The main components linalool and terpinen-4-ol were suggested to be responsible for the antimicrobial activity of the essential oils.
