Analyzing ecosystem services as part of ecological networks in three salt marsh ecosystems

Laura E. Dee et al.

Summary: Biodiversity plays a crucial role in ecosystem services, but determining its specific contributions is challenging. Previous efforts have focused on identifying direct providers of services, but much less is known about how species indirectly influence ecosystem services through interactions with those direct providers. By compiling data sets and ecological networks, this study aims to advance knowledge of supporting species and develop new methods for ecosystem services. The data generated provides valuable information for understanding the importance of biodiversity in ecosystem services.

Germination patterns along a salinity gradient of closely-related halophytes in sympatry

Joaquin Moreno et al.

Summary: This study assessed the influence of salinity on seed germination patterns of six Limonium species. The results showed that increasing salinity delayed and significantly reduced seed germination rates for all studied species. Germination variables, such as final germination percentage, mean time to germination, and recovery, were directly influenced by salinity levels. The successful establishment of Limonium communities depends on a rapid germination strategy when soil salinity decreases.

Constitutive and Adaptive Traits of Environmental Stress Tolerance in the Threatened Halophyte Limonium angustebracteatum Erben (Plumbaginaceae)

Ricardo Mir et al.

Summary: Limonium angustebracteatum is a halophyte endemic to the E and SE Iberian Peninsula with salt glands that excrete excess salts. Under water and salt stress, the anatomy of the leaves changes and salt accumulates in the foliar tissue. Potassium homeostasis plays a significant role in the plant's tolerance mechanism.

Insight into calcium signalling in salt stress response

Javin Bachani et al.

Summary: High salinity stress is a common and severe abiotic stress affecting agricultural lands worldwide. Calcium ion plays an essential role in plants' response to salt stress. The calcium signaling response is a complex network involving various proteins, phytohormones, osmolytes, receptors, and signaling factors.

Physiological responses of the xero-halophyte Salsola drummondii to seasonal alterations of environmental conditions in a salt desert

Aysha Rasheed et al.

Summary: The global climate change of rising temperatures is threatening food security by causing desertification in arid and semi-arid regions. The xero-halophyte Salsola drummondii has morpho-physiological adaptations that can provide information for producing more resilient cash crops. This study examined seasonal variations in growth, photosynthesis, antioxidant defense, water, and ion relations of Salsola drummondii in its natural habitat. The resistance of Salsola drummondii to seasonal alterations was related to plant interactions with soil and atmosphere. Leaf succulence, organic weight, photosynthesis, water use efficiency, compatible solutes, and antioxidant enzyme activities were correlated with precipitation, soil moisture, and electrical conductivity. Photosynthesis and stomatal conductance increased during the monsoon period, and Salsola drummondii responded to reduced water availability like a typical C-4 plant, displaying water and energy-saving seasonal adjustment. The C-4 mode of photosynthesis, higher antioxidant enzyme activities, and accumulation of compatible solutes could protect against photo-oxidative stress. This study highlights the importance of physiological and biochemical adaptations of Salsola drummondii to seasonal alterations and its potential as a model for future crop development in arid-saline habitats.

Calcium homeostasis and potential roles to combat environmental stresses in plants

Rubab Shabbir et al.

Summary: Calcium ions play an important role as intracellular messengers in plant signal transduction mechanisms. They are released in response to various stress stimuli and regulate gene responses through calcium-binding proteins and CDPKs. Despite extensive research on hormonal signaling and its interaction with calcium ions, our understanding of the role of calcium ions in stress tolerance is still limited.

Summary: The study reveals that early priming of mulberry saplings with drought stress can enhance their resistance to subsequent drought, leading to higher biomass accumulation and reduced oxidative damage. The phytohormones ABA and JA also play important roles in exerting drought imprints.

Stress memory of physiological, biochemical and metabolomic responses in two different rice genotypes under drought stress: The scale matters

Priscila Ariane Auler et al.

Summary: Drought is a key factor in crop yield reductions, and plants can develop memory of stress responses, leading to improved tolerance. This study observed responses to recurrent and non-recurrent stresses in rice genotypes, finding that lowland genotypes suffered more damage to the photosynthetic apparatus under drought conditions but showed a more prominent memory response effect after rehydration, while upland genotypes exhibited lower biochemical damage and specific behaviors at biochemical and metabolomics levels.

Salt glands play a pivotal role in the salt resistance of four recretohalophyte Limonium Mill. species

P. Mi et al.

Summary: The study investigated the salinity thresholds of four Limonium species and found that total dry weight, chlorophyll content, and intercellular CO2 concentration were highly correlated with total fresh weights, serving as indicators of plant salt tolerance. Salt gland density, Na+ content, and Na+ secretion rate per salt gland were positively correlated with salt concentration, highlighting the importance of salt glands in adapting Limonium species to high salinity conditions.

Multidisciplinary studies supporting conservation programmes of two rare, endangered Limonium species from Spain

Sara Gonzalez-Orenga et al.

Summary: The study of two local threatened endemics from Valencian salt marshes revealed differences in tolerance to drought and salinity between the species, with L. albuferae showing more resistance to salt but being more susceptible to water stress compared to L. dufourii. Both species exhibited an increase in proline levels in response to stress, with differences in antioxidant enzyme activation correlating with stress type. These findings may aid in the conservation management of the species, indicating that water scarcity could pose a greater challenge for L. albuferae compared to salinity.
