Epigenetic targeting of transposon relics: beating the dead horses of the genome?

Iris Sammarco et al.

Summary: Transposable elements (TEs) are selfish genetic elements that can propagate in a host genome. While most TE copies are degenerated and unable to transpose, they often remain silenced through epigenetic mechanisms. The maintenance of TE relic silencing may be a trade-off between beneficial and deleterious effects, as it may prove detrimental to the host fitness without the benefit of preventing transposition. However, the release of TE relic silencing may provide opportunities for adaptive epimutations to occur.

DNA methylation and histone modifications induced by abiotic stressors in plants

Karolina Czajka et al.

Summary: Plant responses to abiotic stressors involve varied and complex changes in DNA methylation and histone modifications, with a significant percentage of epigenetic modifications induced by stressors. More sensitive methods may be needed to accurately assess the extent and significance of these epigenetic changes. Further research is needed to fully understand the mechanisms underlying epigenetic responses in plants to environmental stressors.

A Synthetic Approach to Reconstruct the Evolutionary and Functional Innovations of the Plant Histone Variant H2A.W

Bingkun Lei et al.

Summary: The diversification of histone variants is achieved through the acquisition of specific motifs and functional properties through convergent evolution. H2A variants are distinguished by specific C-terminal motifs and are often segregated within defined domains of the genome. The timing of evolution of these motifs in relation to segregation mechanisms remains unclear.

Role of Chromatin Architecture in Plant Stress Responses: An Update

Sneha Lata Bhadouriya et al.

Summary: Chromatin structure plays a crucial role in perceiving and transmitting environmental signals, impacting gene expression. Processes like histone modification and DNA methylation are essential for genome reprogramming. Different chromatin remodelers act in various organisms under diverse stresses to transition chromatin from an inactive to an active state.

Polycomb mutant partially suppresses DNA hypomethylation-associated phenotypes in Arabidopsis

Martin Rougee et al.

Summary: DNA methylation and H3K27me3 are two specialized systems for epigenetic silencing in plants and mammals, but the acquisition of H3K27me3 at TE sequences can depend on CURLY LEAF and does not necessarily lead to TE reactivation or increased transposition.

Histone H1 prevents non-CG methylation-mediated small RNA biogenesis in Arabidopsis heterochromatin

Jaemyung Choi et al.

Summary: Cells adapt to different roles by turning different groups of genes on and off, which is controlled by creating regions of active and inactive DNA. In plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana, two types of inactive DNA, E and H, silence transposons through methylation. The involvement of histone H1 in blocking DNA methylation in H regions demonstrates how different DNA silencing processes are focused onto specific genetic regions within cells.

Summary: The conserved chromatin remodeller DDM1 has been a puzzle due to its indirect effect in maintaining plant DNA methylation. However, a recent study shows that DDM1 directly deposits the H2A.W histone variant to silence transposable elements.

The chromatin remodeler DDM1 prevents transposon mobility through deposition of histone variant H2A.W

Akihisa Osakabe et al.

Summary: The study by Osakabe et al. demonstrates that the chromatin remodeler DDM1 plays a crucial role in silencing transposable elements by mediating H2A.W deposition in Arabidopsis, preventing their mobility. This discovery sheds light on the essential mechanism of chromatin remodelers in regulating TEs and provides new insights into the interaction between TEs and their host in the contexts of evolution and disease.

The histone variant H2A.W and linker histone H1 co-regulate heterochromatin accessibility and DNA methylation

Pierre Bourguet et al.

Summary: The study shows that H2A.W antagonizes H1 deposition in heterochromatin, helps maintain heterochromatin accessibility and DNA methylation levels, and co-regulates heterochromatic features with H1. The null mutant created by CRISPR reveals the importance of H2A.W in regulating heterochromatin accessibility.

Summary: Nouelia insignis, a rare and endangered tree species, shows high flowering synchrony and stable flowering duration in its natural population. Pollination requires pollinators, with insect activities playing a crucial role. Despite the low number and frequency of pollinators, reproductive fitness is not limited. Seed setting rate is influenced by changes in flowering phenology between years, with higher seed set in early flowering years.
