Wheat Stem Rust Back in Europe: Diversity, Prevalence and Impact on Host Resistance

Mehran Patpour et al.

Summary: This study investigated the re-emergence of a previously important crop pathogen, wheat stem rust, in Europe. The pathogen has been insignificant in Europe for more than 60 years, but since 2016, it has caused epidemics in certain areas in southern Europe, as well as Central- and West Europe. The study revealed the prevalence of different genotypes/races of the pathogen, indicating clonal reproduction and mutation. It also highlighted the susceptibility of European wheat varieties and the potential role of alternate hosts in the epidemiology of wheat stem rust.

Mapping of Ug99 stem rust resistance in Canadian durum wheat

Sachin Kumar et al.

Summary: Multiple QTL associated with resistance to Ug99-derived Pgt races were identified, with a major QTL on chromosome 6AS explaining much of the resistance variation. This finding provides a potential avenue for improving resistance in Canadian durum wheat.

Analysis of the effects of climate, host resistance, maturity and sowing date on wheat stem rust epidemics

Bita Naseri et al.

Summary: The study showed that wheat cultivar, sowing date, and disease-assessment time significantly affected stem rust severity. Through principal component analysis and multiple regression model, it was found that variables such as disease-onset and maturity date, spring minimum temperature and rainy days, minimum temperature days within 5-20 degrees C, humidity above 60%, resistance index, and sowing date were important factors in predicting and managing stem rust epidemics effectively.

Field resistance to wheat stem rust in durum wheat accessions deposited at the USDA National Small Grains Collection

Pablo D. Olivera et al.

Summary: "The study evaluated over 8,200 spring durum wheat accessions for stem rust resistance, with around 6% showing resistant to moderately susceptible responses. The majority of resistant accessions originated from Ethiopia, Mexico, Egypt, and USA, with additional contributions from eight other countries."

Function and evolution of allelic variations of Sr13 conferring resistance to stem rust in tetraploid wheat (Triticum turgidum L.)

Baljeet K. Gill et al.

Summary: The resistance gene Sr13 in durum wheat has four different haplotypes, with a new haplotype designated as Sr13d. This study suggests that Sr13d may be the original functional allele, with the other three haplotypes likely deriving from Sr13d through mutations.

Plant pathogen infection risk tracks global crop yields under climate change

Thomas M. Chaloner et al.

Summary: The study modeled the impact of future temperature changes on infection risk for 80 fungal and oomycete crop pathogens on 12 major crops, predicting increased risk and crop yield at higher latitudes and major shifts in pathogen assemblages in high-latitude regions. The findings suggest that while high-latitude areas may see both increased yields and infection risks, tropical regions may experience little to no productivity gains and decreased infection risk. Major changes in pathogen assemblages are also expected in the United States, Europe, and China.

Races of Puccinia graminis on barley, oat, and wheat in Canada from 2015 to 2019

T. Fetch et al.

Summary: Stem rust is a major disease affecting barley, oat, and wheat crops worldwide, and analyzing pathogen virulence structure is crucial for detecting new races with increased virulence. Data collected from Canadian provinces from 2015 to 2019 showed absence of stem rust in wheat fields, low incidence in barley and oat fields, and changes in dominant races of the pathogen populations.
